Understanding Personalised Ecology: A Path to Biodiversity

Written on

Chapter 1: The Essence of Personalised Ecology

The concept of personalised ecology delves into how we make environmental choices. Every time I enter my local grocery store, I instinctively gravitate towards the flowers and plants on display. The vibrant colors and delightful fragrances create a small oasis of beauty. However, I often notice that the selection predominantly features ornamental plants, which, while attractive, overlook the potential of native species. This focus on mere aesthetics, rather than biodiversity, represents a significant lost opportunity to encourage conservation efforts. It’s worth noting that native plants are equally beautiful and aromatic!

Native plants are those that naturally thrive in their specific regions, and their restoration is vital for maintaining biodiversity. Unfortunately, many nurseries and stores predominantly offer non-native species, which disrupt local ecosystems and can jeopardize food security by severing vital food webs for insects and animals. Moreover, exotic ornamental plants can become invasive, further threatening native flora and fauna.

A healthy human population relies heavily on diverse ecosystems and their services. Clean air, safe drinking water, nutritious food, fertile soil, and access to medicine are all essential for our wellbeing. Native plants contribute to these ecosystem services, enhancing biodiversity, which in turn supports human health.

As urbanization accelerates, the need to safeguard the wellbeing of city dwellers becomes increasingly pressing. Currently, 55% of the global population resides in urban areas, a figure projected to climb to 68% by 2050 (United Nations, 2018). The European Commission suggests that a staggering 85% of individuals now live in urban settings.

The definitions of urban and rural areas are based on population density and distribution, indicating that a significant majority of the world’s population is urbanized. Regardless of the exact numbers, addressing the health needs of urban residents is one of the key challenges of the 21st century. This is where personalised ecology can play a pivotal role.

I have previously discussed nature-based solutions (NBS) as potential answers to some of the environmental issues stemming from urbanization and climate change. The European Environment Agency defines NBS as “solutions inspired by and supported by nature, providing environmental, social, and economic benefits while enhancing resilience” (European Environment Agency, 2021).

Planting native species in our gardens, parks, and pots represents a straightforward yet impactful nature-based solution that can significantly improve both human health and environmental sustainability.

Section 1.1: The Influence of Personalised Ecology

The choices we make regarding the plants we cultivate reflect a broader movement within the biodiversity conservation community. Personalised ecology encompasses the unique sensory experiences each individual has with nature. While this area has received attention in terms of environmental sustainability, there is a growing focus on understanding the myriad factors that influence the countless decisions people make and their impact on ecosystems.

Personalised ecology can provide insights into how to encourage individuals to make environmentally sound choices—such as opting to buy, sell, or plant native flora. With the United States having lost an alarming 150 million acres of natural habitat in the past century, immediate action is crucial.

The first video, "Perspectives on personalised ecology," offers insights into how our interactions with nature can inform better ecological decisions.

Section 1.2: The Ripple Effect of Our Choices

The significance of societal choices in maintaining healthy ecosystems and conserving biodiversity cannot be overstated. Our landscaping decisions can profoundly affect local biodiversity. By choosing to plant species that sustain birds and the insects they rely on, we can actively contribute to restoring our ecosystems, particularly in urban environments. Each native plant garden acts as a vital piece in the larger puzzle of restoring our planet's biodiversity, which ultimately benefits our health in various ways.

The second video, "Personalised Ecologies: Unlocking interactions with nature," explores the intricate connections between our choices and the natural world.

In closing, let's remember that nurturing nature equates to nurturing ourselves. Consider advocating for your local grocery store to include native plants in their offerings!
