Finding New Perspectives with Comedian Mat Alano-Martin

Chapter 1: The Comedy Grind

For comedians working full-time, it's all too easy to become engrossed in the hustle, often overlooking the sheer joy of earning a living by making people laugh. We frequently find ourselves preoccupied with seizing career opportunities and ensuring our schedules are filled months in advance, forgetting that this delightful pursuit should be enjoyable. In my latest episode of Blowing Up, I have a conversation with my dear friend, the incredibly funny Mat Alano-Martin, where we reflect on the lessons learned from being compelled by the Covid pandemic to take a breather and reassess our career paths.

Section 1.1: Key Insights

Mat's openness is something I've always valued. In 2020, he took a three-month hiatus to care for his mother, which surprisingly improved his mental well-being compared to several years in stand-up. “Strangely, my mental health during that time was better than it had been for several years of doing stand-up…if that tells you anything about stand-up,” Mat reveals. “There was none of the self-doubt or imposter syndrome or jealousy… I never questioned why I wasn’t getting more gigs.”

We discuss the joy of returning to the stage last year, both realizing, “Oh, I’m supposed to enjoy this!” Comedy should be fun! Viewing fellow comedians as rivals only leads to self-hatred. As highlighted in The Zen Diaries of Gary Shandling, you can’t truly appreciate what you have if you’re always chasing the next big thing.

Subsection 1.1.1: A Turning Point

Mat recounts a disastrous comedy festival that pushed him to quit drinking and how he channels adversity into creativity. We also explore his new album with his socio-political punk band Beltalowda, and their decision to donate proceeds to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Section 1.2: The Journey of Creation

Mat shares insights about the process of recording his comedy special for Helium in Philadelphia and another album this year. As a self-managed comedian, he embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, showcasing the impressive and inspiring nature of his journey without formal representation.

Chapter 2: Enjoying the Journey

In this full comedy special, Mat Alano-Martin showcases his unique style, delivering laughs while addressing important themes in life.

In this episode of The Rob Burgess Show, Mat Alano-Martin dives into his experiences in comedy and shares valuable insights on balancing life and laughter.
