Discovering the Essentials for a Meaningful Life and World

Written on

Chapter 1: The Foundation of a Life Worth Living

The esteemed philosopher Søren Kierkegaard proposed that life can be understood through three critical dimensions: the aesthetic, the ethical, and the spiritual (or religious). Each dimension plays a vital role in how we derive meaning in our lives.

“Meaning” is a crucial element of what constitutes “a life worth living.” Just as we require basic necessities like water, food, and shelter, we also need a sense of purpose. To truly experience a fulfilling life, it’s essential to identify what gives our lives significance.

Moreover, it is equally important that we exist in a society that acknowledges and appreciates the worth of our lives. Unfortunately, many individuals, depending on their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class, or other identifiers, often feel their lives lack value. Many of us grapple with the feeling that our existence is not meaningful or that we do not inhabit a world that recognizes our worth.

As an African American who often finds myself asserting, “Black Lives Matter,” I can relate to the yearning for a more meaningful existence in a world that values all lives. Despite personal struggles, I’ve discovered that contemplating Kierkegaard’s three dimensions can aid in creating both “a life worth living” and “a world worth living in.”

Here’s a deeper look into the importance of pleasure and meaning in our lives.

Section 1.1: The Value of Pleasure

Kierkegaard’s first dimension, the aesthetic, revolves around sensory experiences and enjoyment. A life rooted in aesthetics is primarily characterized by the pursuit of pleasure. To live fully in this dimension often means striving to maximize pleasurable experiences, which contribute to a sense of meaning.

However, seeking pleasure is frequently seen as selfish or immature. Those who prioritize pleasure are often portrayed as self-centered, unconcerned with the welfare of others. While pleasure can be perceived as fleeting or superficial, it is important to recognize that a meaningful life includes elements of enjoyment.

Enjoyment is vital; no one wishes to lead a life devoid of joy. Additionally, when we do not find joy in our own lives, it becomes challenging to care about the happiness of others. Therefore, enjoyment is a significant contributor to a meaningful existence.

Yet, relying solely on pleasure is insufficient for a fulfilling life, as the aesthetic dimension will inevitably encounter limitations. This brings us to Kierkegaard’s ethical dimension.

Subsection 1.1.1: Moving Beyond Personal Pleasures

The ethical dimension also offers a form of pleasure that the aesthetic cannot provide alone. It transcends the notion of merely existing and aids in establishing “a world worth living in.”

The ethical dimension imparts meaning through what we often call “values.” Values embody principles that foster care and concern for the well-being of both ourselves and others. By emphasizing the ethical, we cultivate stronger and deeper connections with those around us.

The ethical dimension promotes coexistence among diverse individuals and encourages actions aimed at societal good. Those who operate within this ethical framework consider how their actions impact others, balancing their own pleasure with the collective well-being.

However, ethical considerations can sometimes conflict with the pursuit of pleasure. Thus, a truly meaningful life must balance both the aesthetic and the ethical dimensions. This balance is crucial for creating a world that is equally fulfilling.

Despite the ethical dimension's ability to ensure that personal pleasures do not overshadow societal welfare, Kierkegaard argued that it often neglects one's spiritual self.

Section 1.2: Experiencing the Spiritual

Kierkegaard viewed the spiritual dimension primarily from a Christian perspective, but “spiritual” and “religious” are used interchangeably here. I agree with Kierkegaard that self-exploration is vital for a genuinely spiritual existence.

Kierkegaard critiqued organized religion for distracting individuals from personal spiritual quests, as it often prescribes specific behaviors instead of promoting exploration. As an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, I value both communal and personal spiritual journeys.

Through my exploration, I have found that spirituality provides meaning by acknowledging that life encompasses more than just the material realm. The spiritual dimension encourages curiosity about life’s mysteries.

In relation to this, Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying:

> "The most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of all true art and science..."

I define the spiritual life as one that embraces humility, recognizing that there is far more we do not know than what we do. A genuinely transformative spiritual life is one fueled by curiosity, wonder, and awe—qualities that can lead us to deeper understanding beyond dogma.

When the spiritual dimension enriches our lives in this manner, it significantly contributes to both experiencing a “life worth living” and a “world worth living in.”

Chapter 2: The Importance of Balance

Achieving a fulfilling life hinges on cultivating a balance among these three dimensions: aesthetic, ethical, and spiritual. This balance extends beyond individual lives to our shared existence as a community.

Discussing “a life worth living” is often simpler on a personal level, yet becomes more complex when we consider it within the context of our collective existence.

In a fractured world, many of us are in search of both a “life worth living” and a “world worth living in.” My experiences with the aesthetic, ethical, and spiritual dimensions have taught me that finding balance among these aspects is essential for creating both.
