Creating and Sharing: The Balance Between Art and Indulgence
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Creation
The core of our existence lies in the act of creating and sharing our creations with others. Engaging in creative activities allows for self-expression and showcases our unique abilities. However, in today’s entertainment-saturated culture, many individuals find themselves excessively indulging in passive activities such as:
- Endless scrolling through TikTok
- Watching video after video on YouTube
- Binge-watching shows on Netflix over the weekend
If you recognize yourself in this description, it may be beneficial to carve out some time to produce something meaningful to share. Whether it's with friends, family, or on social media platforms like Twitter, expressing pride in your creations can be incredibly rewarding.
In earlier decades, people entertained themselves through reading, writing letters, or playing outdoors with pets. I refer to the early to mid-20th century when technology was far less pervasive.
When I advise against over-indulgence and promote creation, I don’t mean to imply that you should completely avoid entertainment. As human beings, we naturally seek joy, laughter, and happiness. However, excessive indulgence can lead to addictive behaviors. According to the Mayo Clinic:
“The reward center in the brain releases dopamine in response to a pleasurable experience or hyperarousal. If a person experiences hyperarousal while playing video games, the brain associates the activity with dopamine. The person develops a strong drive to seek out that same pleasure again and again.”
This statement, while focused on video games, applies to all forms of screen-based entertainment. Dopamine serves as the driving force behind many consumer products, including entertainment, which provides fleeting moments of pleasure that keep us coming back for more.
Fortunately, the creative process can also trigger a dopamine release, offering a fulfilling alternative. For example, I experience a sense of accomplishment and pleasure when I finish writing and editing an article, as well as when I learn ways to enhance my writing skills through books. Similarly, developing web applications allows me to engage in problem-solving and creativity, enhancing user experience.
Creating can yield a steady stream of dopamine, leading to a sense of productivity. I encourage you to seek out that creative rush and see how it feels!
“It is better to create than to learn! Creating is the essence of life.”
— Julius Caesar
While this quote resonates with a profound truth, the historical verification of its origin seems elusive. Regardless, it serves as an inspiring reminder of the value of creation.
