Building Resilience: Embracing Emotions for True Strength

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Resilience

The most resilient individuals aren't necessarily the strongest; rather, they are those who stumble yet rise again, time and again. The essence of resilience resides within us. Spiritual guides have long proclaimed, “genuine strength originates from within,” highlighting that resilience hinges on our capacity to engage with our emotions.

However, societal norms often teach us otherwise. We frequently receive accolades for burying, ignoring, and rejecting our emotions, leading us to believe we must maintain constant happiness and avoid expressing feelings like anger, sadness, or disappointment. This emotional suppression detaches us from our true selves.

When we struggle to access our resilience, we often resort to various coping strategies. We may buy into consumerism, seeking material goods that promise fulfillment; turn to alcohol to numb our feelings; or self-medicate with drugs to escape reality. We distract ourselves with social media, television, and work, all in the pursuit of an unyielding happiness.

As a result, these unexpressed emotions become ingrained within us, steering us further away from our emotional compass and diminishing our resilience.

Scientific research has explored how emotions impact major organs, including the lungs, liver, heart, spleen, gallbladder, and kidneys. Findings indicate that different emotions have varying effects on these organs.

Emotional impacts on human organs

The image above illustrates the connection between emotions and vital organs. For example, sadness can impact the lungs, heart, and liver, while anxiety predominantly affects the lungs and heart.

Thus, it’s crucial for us to learn to express healthy anger, recognize our sadness, and process our grief. It may seem straightforward—and it is.

Through the arts, music, and literature, we can navigate our emotions rather than repressing them. When I faced betrayal in my relationship, I allowed myself to grieve for weeks. Country music resonated with my pain, while films depicting betrayal helped me process my feelings. By relating to these narratives, I was able to grieve and ultimately heal.

Artistic expressions—songs, literature, and cinema—can evoke deep emotions, enabling us to confront and process what we’ve held inside. So, indulge in that poignant novel, let the melodies of music wash over you, or enjoy the soothing sounds of a cello. It’s okay to cry. Spend time in nature or engage in any activity that helps you reconnect with your authentic self. This connection is essential now more than ever.

As we drift further from our emotional compass, life becomes increasingly challenging. By addressing and acknowledging suppressed emotions, we can reconcile with ourselves. Accepting our feelings equips us better to face life's challenges and fosters true resilience.
