Throughout my journey, I've engaged in activities that my former self would have scoffed at. While establishing a PR firm for startups, being featured on elite business podcasts, and documenting my experiences online, I've ventured into numerous intimidating territories.

From pitching my startup to prominent media outlets to discussing stress and burnout publicly, these accomplishments would not have materialized if I hadn't learned to manage my negative self-talk. Here are five self-reflection prompts that empowered me to silence my inner critic:

Section 1.1: Am I Thinking or Taking Action?

I often found it challenging to be my own supporter. I would readily applaud others but dismiss my achievements with skepticism. Even when praised, I brushed it off lightly. Worse yet, I fantasized about undertaking bold initiatives on my list without making any real progress toward them.

Observing others take significant risks intensified my own feelings of inaction. Then, I encountered a quote by Jen Sincero that struck me profoundly:

"You have to change your thinking first, and then the evidence appears. Our big mistake is that we do it the other way around. We demand to see the evidence before we believe it to be true."

This realization was a wake-up call. Self-awareness is crucial in determining whether self-criticism is helping you grow or hindering you. Reflect on how often your inner critic prevents you from acting! Remember, many think, but few take decisive steps.

Section 1.2: Do My Surroundings Motivate or Deplete Me?

You become a reflection of what you consume—not just in terms of food, but also in information and influences. Everything you engage with shapes your emotions, thoughts, language, and writing.

There's a thin line between gathering valuable insights and getting bogged down in over-analysis. Consuming the highlight reels of successful young individuals won’t propel you toward your own goals.

Your actions define your aspirations. Limit or cut out content and people that make you feel small or inadequate. It's challenging enough to step beyond your comfort zone, so surround yourself with uplifting ideas and individuals who inspire you to realize the richness of life!

Section 1.3: Am I Settling or Challenging Myself?

This question is vital when facing challenges. Clinging to old thought patterns and allowing negativity to keep you in your comfort zone feels safe, akin to your favorite childhood meal.

However, unlocking your full potential often requires you to act against your instincts. It can be painful and uncomfortable—that’s true self-love.

Self-love is not just indulgent treats and pampering; it involves tough conversations and realistic goal-setting. If something feels difficult, it's likely a sign you’re on the right path. Embrace discomfort; your future self will be grateful!

Section 1.4: Am I Prioritizing Myself?

I often overlooked personal investments, treating them as rewards for later. I’d delay serious writing until I achieved financial success, or wait for a large follower count before honing my skills.

These thoughts communicated to me that I wasn’t ready, worthy, or deserving. It’s important to demonstrate self-care. Choose activities that fuel your growth, shifting from "I'll do this once I achieve that" to "I can pursue this because I have the ability."

Don’t miss chances to invest in yourself; it serves as a remedy for negativity. The all-or-nothing mindset suggests that if you didn't start at 25, it's too late at 35, or even 70. Life doesn’t wait for you—stop allowing negative thoughts to dictate your journey.

Move forward. Clear the path for yourself. Focus on what you can control, and engage with your journey.
