Chapter 1: The Satellite Saga
As I sat in my garage, I observed Infinite diligently putting together countless miniature satellite dishes. He had acquired numerous metal tea strainers, which he skillfully transformed into small saucer-like structures resembling satellite dishes. These compact designs could be folded down to the size of a ping pong ball, making storage easy. With remarkable speed and precision, he attached tiny microprocessors and readily available electronics to each unit.
His concentration was palpable; he worked with a sense of urgency. The robotic-like hands moved fluidly, creating a blur as they assembled thousands of these devices in just five hours. I attempted to engage him with questions, but his collar radiated a bright green light, indicating his central processing unit was heavily engaged.
Given his intense focus, I refrained from disturbing him. He was multitasking efficiently, with his antennae connected to various devices like computers and phones. It was as if he was communicating with them using his antennae, reminiscent of how some individuals express themselves with hand gestures. Occasionally, he would pause to scratch his head or behind his ears.
Once he completed the satellite assembly, he quickly shifted his attention to what appeared to be a rocket. He had procured a large stainless-steel tube, approximately two feet in diameter, and was frantically adding fins and three rocket engines. As evening approached, fatigue and hunger set in. The doorbell rang, and another pizza arrived. Infinite was consuming two pizzas daily, much to my chagrin. I kept reminding him that dogs should eat meat, but he had a fondness for Hawaiian pizza topped with artichoke hearts.
Later that night, I awoke to the sound of him dragging the rocket to the backyard using the lawnmower. He had purchased a robust metal ladder, which he reinforced, and was mixing cement in a plastic pool. By morning, I discovered a fully constructed makeshift rocket and launch pad towering at 12 feet. He was busy filling the rocket with liquid oxygen from a portable tank. I had no idea how he obtained these materials, nor did I dare to ask. My initial fascination had shifted to fear.
I repeatedly cautioned him that launching a rocket from our backyard was illegal. He shrugged off my concerns, insisting that the Fourth of July was the perfect cover for such an endeavor. He reassured me that it was completely safe and without harm. Safe but harmless?
He loaded the payload module with thousands of tiny satellites and awaited nightfall. As we shared another pizza, Infinite darted behind the bushes for a cigarette. I grew weary of explaining the health risks to his puppy lungs. He had countless excuses, primarily citing stress and anxiety. With his 11-week birthday approaching, he was eager to celebrate with Peaches the Poodle.
When the city's fireworks began, we crouched behind the garden wall. Using a remote control he crafted from an Xbox controller, Infinite launched his rocket. It illuminated the sky, outlasting the fireworks and soaring high until it vanished from our sight.
He opened his MacBook Pro to monitor the rocket from the lab. A few keystrokes later, the payload module released ping-pong-sized satellites into low Earth orbit. He maneuvered them across the globe, adjusting their trajectories. By the time he finished deploying the last satellite, he had effectively established a comprehensive satellite network around the planet—all accomplished in just three days.
Exhausted from the excitement, Infinite leaped into my lap, gave me a loving lick on the face, and promptly fell asleep. He was one tired puppy.
