Rediscovering the Beauty of Slow Living: A Journey Through Time

Chapter 1: The Perception of Time
When time stretches out painfully, it can feel as though life is at a standstill. The first reaction is often irritation and impatience, as it seems nothing is occurring. Our society is so conditioned to seek adrenaline that both our minds and bodies are perpetually on alert for the next big moment. Days blur into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years.
Occasionally, you might find yourself reflecting on how quickly time has passed, only to be jolted back into the relentless pursuit of keeping up with the world around you. For many, slowing down feels akin to an addict in recovery—beneficial yet uncomfortable.
A Place Where Time Stands Still
Recently, I visited my ancestral village, a place where life remains largely untouched by modern distractions. Although it has electricity, schools, and internet access, the influence of social media is minimal, allowing for more genuine human interaction.
In my village, people prioritize spending time with one another over scrolling through their social media feeds. While nearly everyone has an Instagram account, few engage with it for prolonged periods.
During my visit, aside from the breathtaking landscapes, I found myself initially at a loss for conversation. I pondered how the villagers could engage with each other without discussing cryptocurrencies, global politics, or celebrity gossip. My initial awkwardness turned into a realization of how much I had missed authentic conversations with real people.
We gathered in a spacious hall where many were present. As the focus shifted away from me, I noticed the natural flow of conversation among them. It took me a moment to grasp their discussions; they were sharing stories about their lives, neighbors, and the happenings in the village.
I want to clarify that these were not uninformed individuals unaware of current events. On the contrary, they seemed well-informed yet chose to prioritize their immediate lives over global dramas. This attitude created an unexpectedly calming atmosphere.
Their conversations were devoid of negativity or judgment. Laughter filled the air, and while disagreements arose, they were expressed without anger or embarrassment. I found it astonishing that a group of people could engage in such heartfelt and refreshing dialogue organically.
The absence of urgency or the incessant ping of cell phones made time feel as though it had slowed down.
Lessons Learned
During my three-day stay, I came to appreciate that even when time feels like it has come to a standstill, there is still plenty happening around us. While traveling by bus or train, you may only catch glimpses of the larger landscape. However, when you take a moment to pause, you become aware of the intricate universe surrounding you—details that speed can obscure.
While rapid movement is essential for discovering life's treasures, taking a moment to slow down or stop entirely can provide valuable perspective. It allows you to notice nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Experiencing Time Through a Child's Eyes
I witnessed a similar phenomenon while playing with my youngest child, who is just five months old. To him, the world is a magnificent place. Everything captures his attention, from a flickering light bulb to the gentle whir of a ceiling fan. He is never in a hurry, always willing to devote his focus to anything that piques his interest.
For him, concepts like tomorrow and yesterday are nonexistent. He lives entirely in the moment, and each small event carries immense significance.
As time passes and he begins to accumulate memories, he will inevitably develop a past. This evolution will lead him to have expectations, which can ultimately foster anxiety and frustration.
Takeaway Message
As he grows, the small wonders of life may begin to lose their charm, relegated to mere trivialities, overshadowed by the pursuit of more significant achievements. This shift can lead to dissatisfaction and a feeling of unfulfillment.
This narrative resonates with many of us. In our youth, we often found joy in the simplest of things; happiness was easily accessible without needing grand events. But as adults, we should take a moment to pause, reflect, and consider what truly brings us joy.
