Chapter 1: Introduction to the Great Backyard Bird Count
Welcome back! I trust you had the chance to engage in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). If so, what species did you observe? Here in Central NY, the results have been quite promising. With a fresh layer of snow, more birds have been visiting the feeders.
In this section, I will share some images and a compilation of the bird species I spotted during the initial three days of the count.
Section 1.1: Notable Observations
Here’s a glimpse of my birdwatching experience so far:
This rare shot features both male and female Northern Cardinals.
If you missed my previous articles about the GBBC, they provide essential information on how to participate and log your findings via eBird:

Section 1.2: Species List from Days 1-3
During the first three days of the count, I observed the following species:
- American Tree Sparrow
- House Sparrow
- House Finch
- Black-Capped Chickadee
- Blue Jay
- American Goldfinch
- Northern Cardinal
- Downy Woodpecker
- Red-Bellied Woodpecker
- European Starling
- Common Grackle
- Mourning Dove
- Dark-Eyed Junco
- Tufted Titmouse
I hope to spot even more species tomorrow, especially with new snow expected tonight, which might attract additional birds to the feeders.
