Discover Your Purpose: How I Found My Why in Life

Chapter 1: The Search for Meaning
For a long time, I was uncertain about my direction in life. Initially, I believed that financial success was the answer. This led me to pursue a medical degree (which I ultimately did not finish), switch to engineering (where I earned two master's degrees and graduated with honors), and work at major corporations in the oil and gas sector. Although my financial situation was stable, I sensed a void that I couldn't quite identify. That was until I encountered a transformative quote in a YouTube video.
This quote changed my perspective drastically. It liberated me and redefined my life path. Alan Watts stated:
"If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you'll spend your life completely wasting your time. You'll be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid."
The first time I read this, I was struck with fear and had to read it again; it felt like an exact reflection of my life. I was pursuing wealth while squandering time on activities that did not fulfill me. This realization prompted me to seek knowledge, keep an open mind, and explore various facets of life.
I ventured into freelancing, established online stores, sold books through Kindle Direct Publishing, and even experimented with YouTube. Although many of these endeavors didn’t pan out as expected for various reasons, they made me feel truly alive. I was engaging in activities I enjoyed.
While some of my businesses were unsuccessful, others thrived. Notably, my Amazon store became a significant success, generating $500,000 in revenue within three years, all while I managed it part-time. Eventually, I began to consider outsourcing the management of the store.
Through this journey, I learned that making mistakes is part of the process. They are essential for growth, which is a stark contrast to the messages we receive in traditional education, where errors are often viewed negatively. I realized I was adept at avoiding failure but failing at achieving true success. Without experimentation and learning from my mistakes, I would never have discovered my true desires.
During my quest for self-discovery, I recognized my profound passion for books—both reading and writing. I have committed to becoming an author. Additionally, I found joy in photography, and regardless of its monetary potential, I plan to pursue this hobby daily.
Drawing from my experiences, I've set a significant goal for the next decade: to become a bestselling author. Although I have yet to determine the subject of my book, whether fiction or non-fiction, I can visualize the day my name appears among bestselling authors. This visualization aligns with a skill I acquired from the renowned book "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill.
This aspiration now fuels my life. While I continue to engage in various activities to meet my financial obligations, I visualize my goal daily and work towards it—whether by reading works from other bestselling authors, writing reviews on my blog (Book Butter Club), or building my personal brand on LinkedIn. All of these efforts synergize to help me achieve my objective.
Setting clear and specific goals can significantly enhance your happiness and overall well-being. As highlighted in an article by Psychology Today:
"Progress on our goals leads to more positive emotions and greater life satisfaction. It enhances our well-being. In turn, positive emotions motivate us to act. This creates a win-win situation if we can just begin."
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I also share my insights and actionable knowledge based on the books I read on my little blog (Book Butter Club). You can explore my other narratives as well.
