Apple's Studio Display: A Game-Changer for Everyday Users

Written on

Chapter 1: Anticipating the Unexpected

At Apple’s Peek Performance event, I wasn't expecting any groundbreaking announcements. I anticipated the usual updates: a new iPhone SE, a refreshed iPad Air, perhaps even a Mac. I had even previously penned a piece expressing my lack of enthusiasm for the event. But just a day before, I tuned into a lively discussion on the Accidental Tech Podcast, which caught my attention:

Casey: "Do you think there’ll be any new displays?"

John: "I haven’t heard any rumors about that."

Casey: "You never know!"

Marco: "Only wish lists; no solid leads."

John: "Some rumors suggest they’re in the works, but nothing imminent."

Marco: "Yeah, it feels like they’re at least six months to a year out."

This exchange sparked a flicker of hope in me. If these commentators, often off the mark, thought a display announcement was unlikely, perhaps there was a chance we might see one. And hope is a powerful thing.

As the event commenced, Tim Cook swiftly moved through announcements: exciting new content for Apple TV+, sporty updates, green iPhone 13s, the iPhone SE, and the iPad Air. With so much revealed in the first fifteen minutes, it became evident that a significant portion of the presentation would focus on the Mac. The buzz around a potential 'Mac Studio' paired with a 7K display started to feel plausible.

However, my excitement waned as I contemplated the implications of a 7K display. What would be the price tag? I was looking to upgrade from the $999 Thunderbolt Display that had served me for nearly ten years—not to invest in a costly $6,000 XDR model. When John Ternus, Apple’s SVP of Hardware Engineering, introduced the Studio Display as “the perfect complement” to the high-end Mac Studio, my hopes of a consumer-friendly option dimmed.

When Mac Engineering Program Manager, Nicole Kordes, appeared to discuss the Studio Display, it felt like my apprehensions were confirmed. She labeled the display as “in a class of its own” with “incredible features that no other desktop display can deliver,” indicating this was more a sibling to the Pro Display XDR than a successor to the Thunderbolt Display.

But then, just when I thought all was lost, Nicole announced that the Studio Display features a 27-inch screen with “14.7 million pixels at 218 pixels-per-inch, making it a 5K Retina display.” A 27-inch 5K display? What a delightful surprise! This was precisely what I had wished for since I purchased my 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Chapter 2: Features and Pricing

As Nicole detailed the display’s specs—600 nits brightness, P3 wide color, and True Tone—I began to worry about the cost. The features like a 12MP Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage support, a studio-quality microphone array, and six speakers with spatial audio seemed excessive for my needs, leading me to fear a price over two thousand dollars. I was relieved when John Ternus announced the base price of $1599.

While $1600 for a 27-inch monitor isn't exactly pocket change, compared to the mediocre $1300 LG 27-inch UltraFine 5K Monitor it replaces, it's a steal. When you factor in inflation, the price difference from the Thunderbolt Display is only $340, for which you receive numerous high-end features absent from its predecessor. Although I would have preferred a base price of $1299 without the over-the-top camera and audio, I was pleasantly surprised by how closely the Studio Display aligned with my wish list.

What can I expect from an upgrade from my current Acer KA270HK 4K monitor to the Studio Display? A great deal! First, let’s talk design. The Acer is just okay, while the Studio Display exudes beauty. I never grew tired of the Thunderbolt Display's aesthetics, and I eagerly anticipate that feeling once more.

In terms of resolution, while my Acer is a 4K display, I have it set to 3008-by-1692 pixels, which I find optimal for macOS. The Studio Display, however, will operate at its full 5120-by-2880 resolution—nearly ten million additional pixels for my aging eyes to enjoy. Beyond the resolution, the Studio Display will also deliver brighter images with more vibrant colors.

Another feature I’ve missed since transitioning to the Acer is built-in USB ports. I look forward to the convenience of disconnecting a single cable when taking my M1 MacBook Air on the go. Even the Thunderbolt Display had a MagSafe port for power, which I miss.

While I don’t expect to utilize the webcam or microphones much, the six speakers with spatial audio will surely enhance my experience. Even someone like me, not particularly an audiophile, will likely appreciate the leap in quality compared to the Acer’s basic 2W stereo speakers.

Chapter 3: A Long-Awaited Replacement

Since my Thunderbolt Display ceased functioning, I have awaited a worthy replacement. I spend the majority of my day in front of a screen, and for the past four years, the Acer has been a decent monitor, but it simply cannot compete with the Studio Display. For someone like me, who spends extensive time at a computer, a top-notch monitor is as essential as the computer itself.

Now that I have a fantastic machine in the M1 MacBook Air, boasting nearly identical single-core performance to the highest configuration of the newly launched Mac Studio, I’m finally on the brink of connecting it to an exceptional Apple external monitor.

Upcoming Apple Studio Display

The polishing cloth I ordered has already arrived. Now all I need is the display to go with it.
