Ethical Considerations: Examining Musk's Corporate Practices

Written on

Chapter 1: The Ethical Dilemma of Animal Testing

Recently, two significant stories involving Elon Musk’s businesses caught my attention. The first highlighted the troubling reports of approximately 1,500 animals being killed during tests conducted by Musk's Neuralink. These tests, which involve implanting electrical devices in the brains of pigs, sheep, and monkeys, have raised serious ethical questions. Employees have voiced concerns about the hastiness of the experiments, resulting in unnecessary suffering and repeat tests due to inadequate preparation time. The pain inflicted on these animals has led many to wonder why such practices are even allowed.

Although the technology could potentially aid paralyzed individuals or assist with neurological disorders, Musk seems to have broader aspirations for integrating human brains with computers. This ambition brings forth significant ethical challenges. There has been no democratic dialogue regarding the desirability of transforming humanity into cyborgs, and such fundamental changes should not be permitted to occur without scrutiny.

Section 1.1: Labor Rights and Treatment of Employees

The second story revolves around the dismissal of cleaners at Musk's Twitter headquarters. After receiving notices regarding potential job losses, these workers organized a union to voice their grievances but were quickly terminated, just weeks before the holiday season. The cleaners expressed feelings of being treated poorly, highlighting the often thankless nature of their work. Despite being essential members of society, cleaners face some of the lowest wages and minimal job security, benefits, or protection from exploitation. For someone as wealthy as Musk to treat them in this manner is inexcusable. They were reportedly informed that their roles would soon be taken over by robots. Is this the trajectory we want society to take?

This incident follows the recent layoffs of numerous Twitter employees involved in content moderation, raising alarms about the potential rise in hate speech and misinformation. Musk champions unrestricted free speech, which, while seemingly beneficial in theory, poses serious risks for vulnerable populations and minority groups. The proliferation of harmful conspiracy theories and misinformation can have dire consequences.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Corporate Reflection of Character

There is a saying that one can gauge a person's character by the company they keep, which can also be interpreted to reflect how someone conducts their business. In Musk's case, this perspective raises questions about his corporate ethics. It appears that, given his immense wealth, Musk might feel exempt from conventional moral standards, behaving as if anything is permissible. Although he has disclosed that he is neurodivergent, which adds complexity to his narrative, it doesn’t absolve him from the moral principles that govern us all. He is undoubtedly intelligent and skilled in generating wealth, but this does not shield him from scrutiny.

While it is important to acknowledge Musk's accomplishments in making electric vehicles accessible and promoting renewable energy, it does not render him immune to criticism.

Chapter 2: A Call to Action

As consumers, we have the power to convey that ethical standards matter and that we expect higher accountability from those in positions of influence. Whether it involves leaving Twitter or supporting the striking cleaners, our choices send a vital message. The boundaries of acceptable behavior exist for a reason and apply universally, regardless of wealth or status.
