In this installment of our favorite destinations, we delve into the enchanting Petersham Nurseries located in Richmond, London. This venue is not just an ordinary garden center; it’s a delightful mix of a plant shop, café, and restaurant that particularly captivates Mrs. Pearce. Unlike typical garden centers that focus on volume and low prices, Petersham Nurseries offers a more curated experience, though it may be a bit pricey.
I couldn’t help but notice a charming stone squirrel priced at £150 and a stunning large pot listed at £3500!
While it might not be the best spot for those of us on a tight budget, it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring and enjoying the café. The atmosphere is wonderfully Mediterranean, with Bougainvilleas cascading in the restaurant and vines weaving through the café. The vibrant plants stand in stark contrast to my own gardening attempts!
Section 1.1: Culinary Delights Amidst Nature
Dining at the café was a bit of a splurge; our light lunch came to about £50. I felt good about choosing a salad, but indulged in some banana bread, both of which were delightful!
After our meal, we took a leisurely stroll along the Thames in Richmond, a place filled with memories as it’s where we tied the knot 35 years ago. We happily grabbed a pint of lime and soda for 60 pence at "Slug and Lettuce," although a basic ice cream from a vendor set us back £5—just a reminder of London’s prices. The riverside in Richmond offers a serene escape, where you can forget you’re in the bustling city, even as crowds gathered to bask in the rare sunshine.

Local rowers were out on the water, and paddleboarding has surged in popularity. We even spotted a group of students setting out on a canoeing adventure. Dogs were cooling off in the shallow waters, and the distinctive calls of ring-necked parakeets—exotic birds that have made London their home—added to the ambiance. It was a beautiful day, and I highly recommend Petersham for any gardening enthusiasts.
