A Man's Worth: The Journey from Success to Self-Discovery

Chapter 1: The Weight of Expectations
For generations, the belief that “a man is meant to provide and protect” has been passed down, creating a strong narrative for boys as they grow. This notion leaves little room for interpretation, leading many to aspire to careers like firefighters, police officers, doctors, or astronauts. The allure of adventure and financial reward typically shapes our childhood dreams, but life often has different plans.
A close friend of mine once provided a glimpse into what many would consider an ideal life: a beautiful wedding, no children yet, and the chance to build a future with his best friend—his wife. He secured a high-paying job complete with benefits, a 401k, and generous overtime. To an outsider, he appeared to embody the American dream.
However, after reconnecting years later, I discovered that my former best friend had been grappling with alcoholism during his time in that seemingly perfect job. He confided that he felt trapped in a position devoid of purpose, with fulfillment only arriving at the end of each pay period. Spiritually drained, he was forced to step down from his church role, and the ensuing depression loomed over him like a persistent shadow.
Despite being raised in a loving Christian household and enjoying a seemingly perfect life with his wife and children, my friend was deeply troubled. He concealed his struggles from everyone, feeling a profound sense of shame while appearing to excel in life.
When Expectations Break, Miracles Can Happen
For my friend, that pivotal moment came with a suspension and ultimately losing his job. Panic set in as uncertainty, feelings of failure, and a deep pit of despair enveloped him—emotions that few can truly comprehend.
- Depression: A profound sense of hopelessness and sadness.
- Anxiety: A nagging feeling of unease or worry about what lies ahead.
- Shame: A distressing sense of humiliation.
Experience is indeed the best teacher. In his darkest times, my friend sought guidance from older mentors. One particularly wise figure advised him to “Do nothing and heal.” He embraced this philosophy, taking months to focus on healing while living off his savings.
Eventually, he found a job at a college, working with students despite lacking a degree. The pay was significantly lower, yet he rediscovered his sense of purpose.
Now, with renewed pride, he impacts lives daily and has strengthened himself in three essential areas: spiritually, physically, and mentally. He is less than 25 days away from completing the 75 Hard Challenge—a program designed to cultivate mental resilience—and has transformed both his body and mindset in the process. He has become a better husband, father, friend, and mentor, ultimately increasing his worth in the eyes of those around him.
