# Understanding Programmer Burnout: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Reality of Burnout

Burnout is a prevalent issue affecting various professionals, including programmers, medical staff, educators, law enforcement, and journalists. My own experience in a demanding corporate environment consumed my time and energy around the clock. I typically worked from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM but often found myself staying late until 8:00 PM.

My phone was incessantly ringing, even during off hours, and there were instances when I was picked up by a taxi in the early morning to return to work. I had to be available at 8:00 AM sharp, and during my vacations, my manager insisted that I keep my phone on and restricted my travel to within 200 kilometers, claiming I might be summoned to resolve urgent issues.

This relentless pressure triggered a burning sensation in my stomach and frequent panic attacks whenever my phone rang. Even personal calls from my wife would induce anxiety, as I feared it might be a work-related emergency. Over time, I noticed my hair thinning and patches forming in my beard, prompting a visit to a dermatologist who diagnosed me with Alopecia areata.

My doctor attributed this condition to stress and suggested a career change. However, with a family to support, I felt trapped. An unexpected turn of events occurred when the company merged with a larger organization, leading to the dismissal of many managers, including myself. For three months following my departure, the sound of a phone ringing continued to evoke anxiety.

Currently, I work as an IT analyst at a tech company, where my programming duties are far less stressful compared to my previous role. Just like in medicine, where some professionals endure 24-hour shifts while others maintain regular business hours, the same applies to programmers. Some thrive in high-pressure environments, while others enjoy a healthy work atmosphere—thankfully, I now belong to the latter group.

Through this journey, I have come to understand the critical importance of recognizing our physical and mental limits in the workplace. It is essential to respect these boundaries to prevent further harm to our well-being. Thank you for taking the time to read my story!
