Transforming Struggles into Success: From School to Startups

Chapter 1: A Tumultuous Educational Journey
From an early age, my relationship with education was anything but stable. Despite my efforts, my backpack was always overflowing with loose papers, assignments were frequently submitted late, and my work often went unsigned. The challenges of ADHD and executive dysfunction made classroom life particularly tough. As I grew older, this struggle escalated into intense conflicts with myself, my parents, and my teachers.
When I entered college, I faced recurring bouts of depression, often lacking the motivation to attend classes. I found solace in the thought of dropping out entirely and leaving it all behind. Thankfully, I had my mom’s unwavering support, which helped me through the darkest moments.
The spring semester of my junior year proved to be especially challenging. My anxiety's biggest adversary remained unchanged since elementary school: the constant struggle to remember assignment deadlines. As coursework intensified, my executive dysfunction made it increasingly draining to keep track of due dates. Each missed deadline or forgotten exam filled me with frustration and despair, leading me to confide in my mom about the pressure I felt from school.
In a pivotal moment, she offered to log into my online courses every morning to text me what I needed to complete that day. This simple act brought an unexpected sense of relief into my life. I began to understand how my mind had been exaggerating the weight of routine tasks.
As a computer science student, I soon thought, there must be a way to automate what my mom was doing for me. Coincidentally, I was enrolled in a Python class where I learned about web scraping, a technique for extracting data from websites. Within a week of research and experimentation, I created a bot that logged into my learning management system each morning, retrieved my upcoming assignments, and sent them to me in a text format similar to my mom's messages.
I was excited to share my achievement with my mom, revealing that my bot had taken over her role. I introduced it to friends, who eagerly accepted the daily assignment reminders it provided. Everyone appreciated the convenience.
As the pandemic unfolded, I reached out to a friend studying business management, and we decided to collaborate. We named our venture Lazy Texts, and the journey from there has been remarkable. Within a year, we partnered with multiple schools and supported over a thousand students. Since graduating in December 2020, I frequently receive messages from people expressing how Lazy Texts has alleviated their stress and helped them keep up with their studies. Helping students avoid the struggles I faced is incredibly fulfilling.
