To begin with, let’s define self-esteem. According to Google, it refers to "confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect." This definition indicates that if you feel worthless or lack self-admiration, it's understandable to struggle with low self-esteem. While certain medical conditions may require professional intervention, I believe I can offer guidance on how to enhance your self-esteem.

Everyone experiences fluctuations in their self-esteem. Reflecting on my early twenties, I endured both physical and emotional abuse from someone I cared for deeply. I often thought, "My voice is annoying, I'm too short, I have nothing to offer," and believed others were superior to me. The trauma of being hurt by a loved one is profound, and it severely impacted my self-esteem during those formative years.

Fast forward five or six years after I found the strength to leave that toxic relationship. I became a top writer in various categories on Medium and received a bonus just three months into my writing journey. I also adopted a routine of regular exercise and improved my diet. Additionally, I started helping others online, offering advice based on my experiences. The gratitude I received from others was uplifting.

I felt positive and my self-esteem had significantly improved. To illustrate my transformation: I went from contemplating ending my life to aspiring to write a book and help others, which brought me joy.

This kind of change requires time, effort, and a period of solitude. For me, being alone was crucial; I had spent my early twenties in constant fear and never alone. Embracing solitude allowed me to confront my fears and ultimately became a source of healing and productivity.

The first step in rebuilding self-esteem is identifying its root causes. The second step is recognizing that things can only improve once you choose to take action. Never convince yourself that you cannot achieve more due to external factors.

It can be challenging to acknowledge your value in difficult situations, such as abusive relationships or prolonged unemployment. However, if you can recognize your circumstances and commit to improving—even if slowly—you are making progress. Treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a loved one is essential; this is self-respect.

What has worked for me may not resonate with everyone, but I hope it inspires you in some way.
