Navigating the Upside Down: Developers vs. Business Realities

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dual Worlds of Development and Business

Recently, while enjoying the latest episode of Stranger Things’ fourth season, an intriguing comparison struck me. The realm of business and the universe inhabited by developers bear a resemblance to Hawkins and its sinister counterpart, the Upside Down. These two realms, while vastly different, often intersect, leading to chaotic outcomes.

The World of Developers

In the vibrant landscape of development, creativity thrives. Developers engage in problem-solving, often losing themselves in the depths of their code. They explore platforms like StackOverflow or experiment with the latest frameworks and programming languages. Amidst this camaraderie, they might even poke fun at the unfortunate soul responsible for the latest build failure, all while hoping to avoid the spotlight themselves. When they inevitably do find themselves at fault, it becomes a humorous anecdote during stand-up meetings, often referred to as a "PEBCK" (Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard).

The Business Realm

Beneath the surface of this joyful developer community lies a darker reality that breeds anxiety and discontent. Although these worlds should ideally remain apart, there are times when portals open, allowing unwelcome influences from the business domain to seep through.

These unwelcome visitors can take many forms. One such creature is the notorious "Product Owner," often likened to the demogorgon. They appear in daily meetings, discussing deadlines and projects that need completion at breakneck speed. Another formidable foe is the mind flayer, represented by corporate emails that inundate developers with messages about "pride of ownership" and the pressures of multi-million dollar contracts. These communications often accompany discussions with managers and the annual fiscal year kick-off, attempting to impose the belief that the company is an extension of oneself, thus promoting the unhealthy notion that working late or on weekends is a pathway to success.

Finally, there is Vecna, a creature that thrives on fear. It preys on anxieties about job security, suggesting that "the job market is tough," and exacerbates feelings of inadequacy with reminders to "gain more experience." It even fosters fears of losing colleagues by insisting that "this is a great working environment."

The Saviors of Separation

How can we shield ourselves from these disruptive forces? Just as the gang in Stranger Things relies on "Eleven" and her psychic abilities, developers have their own ally: Agile methodology. Agile serves as our protector, creating a buffer against the daunting creatures that emerge from the business world.

This video showcases the innovative approaches in machining and highlights the incredible capabilities of CNC technology, drawing a parallel to the creativity found in development.

Chapter 2: Embracing Our Reality

While we navigate this complex relationship between developers and business, we can find inspiration in creative pursuits.

This video explores how Blender can be used to create a Stranger Things-inspired upside-down world, reminding us of the endless possibilities in our craft.
