Navigating Autism: A Sunday Reflection on Owen's Journey

Chapter 1: Morning Moments
Owen woke up just before five, alert and eager for the day ahead. He was particularly excited about the upcoming yoga classes, repeatedly asking for details. I believe he will truly enjoy it.
As we prepared for church, he insisted on bringing his tablet along. However, his persistent need for reassurance about visiting grandma tomorrow was palpable. It pains me to witness his struggles; his inability to let go of certain thoughts intensifies his anxiety. Not responding only heightens his distress, while answering leads to a barrage of related questions, creating an exhausting cycle. It's particularly challenging when he misphrases his inquiries, requiring me to correct him. If I inadvertently validate a misconception, it sends him into a spiral.
Despite the advice from various doctors and therapists, we find ourselves seeking more guidance, hoping that one day we'll uncover the right approach to help him progress.
During our drive to church, I attempted to teach him about directions—north, south, east, and west—and asked if he recognized various cities. He expressed a desire to live on a farm with zoo animals, specifically mentioning an elephant, a T-Rex, and a little pig. He also envisioned a yoga studio with a large mat at his blue house, along with a tall building, though I’m uncertain of its purpose.
He did well at church, but I couldn’t persuade him to visit anywhere else afterward. Upon returning home, his repetitive questioning about seeing grandma continued. I find myself at a loss on how to manage this; my heart aches as I see how distressed he becomes. My mother even sent him a message to remind him she would see him, as he was reluctant to speak with her over the phone.
Days like this are tough; no matter how I try to distract him without directly answering, he remains restless. I’m hopeful that yoga will help calm his mind and center his thoughts. His physical therapist has introduced him to several yoga poses, and I learned one today.
As the end of the school year approaches, I sense his anxiety rising, and I pray for a peaceful week ahead. I'm grateful for his laughter and the songs he sang for me today. May yesterday's story inspire tomorrow's success. Let’s be the change we wish to see in the world. Sending smiles to everyone and enjoying those donut daze!
