How My Apple Watch Became a Lifesaver: A Personal Account

The Importance of Technology in Emergencies
For those who might be skeptical about technology, I urge you to take a moment to consider this true story. It could potentially change your perspective on the benefits of modern devices.
While some individuals resist the idea of constant monitoring and tracking by technology, it's essential to recognize that our daily lives are no longer as private as they once were. Yes, there are ways to manage what you share, and it's wise to do so, but when a simple gadget can be a lifesaver, I would gladly sacrifice some privacy.
My Experience
One Thursday night, I was dining with a coworker at a restaurant situated on the first floor, which featured a steep staircase. As we wrapped up our meal, neither of us held onto the handrail while descending the stairs.
Unexpectedly, we lost our balance and tumbled down the staircase. I suspect I struck my head, which may have resulted in a mild concussion. We shook off the incident with laughter, although my friend ended up with two black eyes. After leaving the restaurant, she asked if I could walk the four kilometers home. I agreed, eager to keep my step count up.
As I made my way home around 10 PM, navigating Sydney's notoriously uneven sidewalks, the effects of the concussion intensified. I tripped over a tree root, hit my head again, and lost consciousness.
My Lifesaving Device
A few hours later, I regained consciousness to the sounds of rescue helicopters and bright lights. A kind nurse was leaning over me, inquiring if I knew where I was.
Given the situation, I guessed I might be in a hospital. My assumption was correct; I was in the Emergency Department of a major trauma center. I had been transported by ambulance, where brain scans, a chest X-ray (a COVID requirement), and blood tests were conducted while I was still unconscious.
The nurse explained that my Apple Watch had automatically summoned an ambulance, providing emergency responders with my GPS location and alerting them that I was unresponsive. They found me unconscious near a large tree and brought me to the ED.
Fortunately, I had activated the fall detection feature on my Apple Watch, which detects hard falls and alerts emergency services if it does not sense movement within a minute. It also notifies my designated contact.
Given my unresponsive state, I believe the watch saved my life. Subsequent brain scans revealed a minor bleed, necessitating a three-day stay in the neuro ward as the situation stabilized.
I am immensely thankful to the NSW Ambulance Service, the hospital staff, and of course, my Apple Watch for its crucial role in my recovery.
Regarding my privacy, I welcome my Apple Watch's presence in my life, capable of tracking me wherever I go.
