Chapter 1: Introduction to Fleas
Years ago, I had the task of creating a presentation featuring transparent cat fleas for my Medical Entomology course. It was quite serendipitous when my cat started scratching just as I was assigned this project! After giving her a flea bath, I watched as the fleas floated away, allowing me to collect them for my excited classmates in the lab.
Here are some intriguing facts about fleas that you might find surprising:
Dogs Can Get Cat Fleas
In North America, it's common for dogs to contract cat fleas. Although dog fleas are prevalent in Europe, they are quite rare in the U.S. Cat fleas remain attached to their hosts throughout their life cycle, which includes mating and laying eggs.
Fleas Can Transmit Plague
While this is uncommon, it is true! In regions like the Rocky Mountains, warnings abound about avoiding ground squirrels, primarily because they harbor fleas that can carry the plague. Historically, during the notorious Bubonic Plague outbreak in the 1300s, fleas were largely responsible for spreading the deadly bacterium, rather than rats themselves. Nowadays, fleas are more frequently known to transmit tapeworms and murine typhus.
Worms Can Infest Fleas
There are numerous methods to combat fleas, but did you know that some parasites target fleas? Research indicates that applying a specific nematode spray to lawns can effectively eliminate flea larvae.
Fleas Hibernate Until Disturbed
Fleas can remain dormant until they sense a host nearby. They emerge from their chrysalis—part of their metamorphosis, similar to butterflies—ready to feed. They are particularly adept at detecting elevated carbon dioxide levels, such as those produced when you exhale.
A Blood Meal Allows Mating
After consuming a blood meal, cat fleas can mate within 24 hours. Without a blood source, they show little interest in reproducing.
Fleas Are Global Residents
There are over 2,500 species of fleas worldwide. According to the CDC, more than 300 of these species can be found in the United States alone!
