Embracing Minimalism: A Personal Journey Towards Simplicity

Written on

Chapter 1: My Path to Minimalism

For years, I've experienced immense joy and relief each time I declutter an area of my home, donating bags of items to my local Goodwill. Shedding things I no longer need not only lightens my load but also allows these items to serve someone else. My interest in minimalism has grown, fueled by articles on Medium and blogs like Joshua Becker’s Becoming Minimalist and No Sidebar. Now, I feel it's time to fully embrace minimalism and enjoy its many rewards. Are you ready to join me on this journey?

Defining Minimalism

Minimalism can be interpreted in numerous ways, depending on personal perspectives. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as “a style or technique characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity.” Conversely, The Minimalists describe it as “a tool for finding freedom—freedom from fear, guilt, and the overwhelming nature of consumer culture.”

I resonate most with Joshua Becker's view, which emphasizes “intentional living with only the essentials that support my purpose.” He highlights the clarity and purpose that come from minimizing distractions and focusing on what truly matters.

Decluttering My Life

With Becker's definition in mind, my minimalist journey involves not just reducing my belongings but also simplifying every facet of my life. As my husband and I prepare to sell our house, decluttering is my top priority. I want to keep only the items that truly matter as we transition to a new home.

I’m also examining my digital life, aiming to streamline the apps on my devices and eliminate unnecessary files from my computer. Additionally, I’m considering how to simplify my finances, health, fitness, relationships, and mindset. My goal is to ensure every aspect of my life is evaluated through the lens of minimalism.

It’s important to note that my husband and two teenage boys do not fully share my minimalist aspirations. However, they are not hoarders, which makes the process easier. My husband has been sorting through his belongings, selling or donating items he no longer needs, while also acquiring new items that align with his interests. Though he may not fully embrace minimalism, I can focus on my possessions and influence household decisions.

Recently, both of my sons went through their books, deciding which to keep, sell, or discard. They enjoyed selling their unwanted books at a local used bookstore, which also helped declutter their rooms!

Principles of Minimalism

Through my research, I’ve identified several key principles of minimalism:

  1. Personal Definition of 'Less'

What constitutes “less” varies from person to person. Minimalism encourages you to keep what you value, rather than adhering to a strict number of items.

  2. Intentional Living Based on Priorities

Minimalism is about aligning your life with your values. It's easy to accumulate things impulsively; instead, we should be deliberate in our choices.

  3. Replacing Rather Than Upgrading

I tend to use my devices until they no longer function well. This mindset is minimalist in nature, focusing on replacing worn-out items rather than constantly upgrading.

  4. Money as a Tool

I view money as a resource to support my goals. By prioritizing my spending, I can allocate more funds towards what truly matters to me, like retirement and my children’s education.

  5. Quality Over Quantity

Minimalists often prioritize quality in all areas of life, from possessions to relationships and health.

Benefits I Anticipate from Minimalism

Embarking on this minimalist journey holds numerous potential benefits for me, including:

  • Reduced stress from managing fewer belongings and activities
  • Increased savings to direct towards meaningful financial goals
  • Less concern about societal comparisons regarding possessions
  • Enhanced productivity through a focus on priorities
  • Greater ability to rest without the burden of excess

Conclusion

As I embark on this journey toward minimalism, I anticipate numerous benefits that will enhance my life. What about you? Can you envision how embracing minimalism might improve your own life? While it may not suit everyone, I believe that many can find value in its principles. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
