Chapter 1: Understanding Forgiveness

“Holding onto anger is akin to clutching a hot coal, intending to throw it at someone else; it’s you who ends up getting burned.” — Buddha

Concept of Forgiveness

I have often encountered the notion that forgiveness is more beneficial for the one forgiving than the one being forgiven. Initially, I struggled to comprehend how releasing someone from the pain they caused me could facilitate my healing. Remaining angry seemed to garner sympathy from others, creating a sense of martyrdom for myself.

The shadows of resentment enveloped my thoughts, convincing me I was destined for a life of misery. I frequently revisited painful memories, as my wounds became my source of comfort. Bitterness took residence beside me, assuring me that my anger, sadness, and bitterness were justified. This was the person I was before I discovered my life's purpose. Despite enduring various hardships over the past 32 years—some self-inflicted and others not—I don’t regret my journey. It is my story, scars and all.

Here’s how life has guided me to understand the essence of forgiveness.

Expressing Instead of Suppressing

When I allow the unkindness of others to linger in my mind, I permit negativity to dictate my actions. This negativity often spills over onto those around me, leaving them puzzled as to why I can’t simply find happiness.

Harboring hate leads to unrealistic expectations for both yourself and others, distorting your perception of reality. Living in the past and clinging to old wounds hinders your ability to appreciate life, creating a vicious cycle of self-loathing.

If you genuinely desire change and forgiveness, you must confront your own flaws. Being intentional and brutally honest with yourself is crucial to breaking the cycle of self-destruction. I have found meditation invaluable for gaining perspective and observing my thoughts objectively. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I seek healthier ways to cope. When someone or a painful memory disturbs my peace, I express my feelings through writing. I remind my insecurities that I refuse to be a victim today. Embracing vulnerability with myself and my inner child has become essential.

Ultimately, you are the only one who can cultivate your happiness. Putting your thoughts and feelings on paper can provide immediate relief, allowing you to release the negative emotions you've clung to for too long. Emotions must be felt and released, especially the painful ones.

How we choose to move forward from uncontrollable circumstances shapes our lives. Will you acknowledge the hurt and allow it to pass constructively, or suppress it, leading to a life devoid of purpose? The choice is yours—choose wisely.

Resentment: The Seed of Bitterness

The only person affected by resentment is you. When you cannot forgive, you set yourself up for a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Feeling that life is unfair and worthless often stems from unresolved trauma that you continue to cling to. I know firsthand the toll this cycle takes on well-being. I harbored so much animosity from my heartbreaks that my once-positive personality gradually dimmed over the years due to my inability to forgive others and myself.

Working through trauma to embrace forgiveness can bring painful memories to the surface. Conversely, failing to forgive leads to a lifetime of suffering, impacting both mental and physical health. You may find yourself burdened with bitterness, hate, and the weight of unfulfilled expectations and regret.

Living in the past denies you the opportunity to thrive in the present. What is your life worth to you? The choice is yours—choose wisely.

If You Choose Forgiveness...

First, reflect on:

What deliberate change can I make to let go of what I cannot alter? Be honest with yourself; only you can hinder your progress and fulfillment. Compile a list of actions you can take to shift your mindset and embrace forgiveness for your healing. You might find inspiration in this article I wrote on personal growth. The most crucial step is simply to begin.

You must accept what is and change what you are willing to accept. This means recognizing that no amount of anger or longing for a different life will alter reality. Accepting what is entails understanding the truth of your situation, while changing what you accept involves establishing non-negotiable boundaries in your life.

Life can serve us some tough challenges. Each of us carries trauma, and we all face struggles. Stop expecting others to solve your problems and hold yourself accountable.

This is the path to healing and forgiveness.
