Chapter 1: A Transformative Experience
As I approach graduation, I realize that my time in college has gifted me far more than just a degree...

Four years ago, I was a reserved young adult, uncertain of my identity and future. When I started college, I viewed my life through a pragmatic lens, believing that my academic achievements would be the most memorable aspect of my journey. I never understood how the college experience could encompass more than just education. However, life has a way of surprising us, and I was in for quite a revelation.
Over the past four years, I have undergone a remarkable transformation. Looking back, I can confidently say that I am not the same person I was four years prior. What catalyzed this change? It largely stemmed from embracing self-love and acceptance.
During my childhood and teenage years, I often tried to blend in, remaining unnoticed. I was afraid of being seen for who I truly was. My traumatic experiences at home and school felt like burdens I needed to hide from the world. I frequently imagined what my life might have been like if I had experienced a typical upbringing, free from anxiety and instability. In many ways, I saw myself as a victim of my circumstances.
It wasn't until I took the time to reflect on my life that I discovered the strength in fully owning my experiences. The exclusion and bullying I faced allowed me to understand the true meaning of inclusion, respect, and love. The many times I had to reinvent myself during my formative years instilled in me resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change.
In many ways, the freedom I found in college empowered me to become the architect of my life. I began to recognize that my life, regardless of its unconventional and painful moments, was uniquely mine. This realization opened my eyes to the possibilities of taking charge of my own narrative. Rather than conforming to the expectations of peers, family, or society, I chose to forge my own path.
I no longer felt obligated to conform to others’ expectations. I gave myself permission to explore facets of my identity that had long been suppressed, such as my empathy, concern for others, self-confidence, and unwavering individuality. This journey of self-discovery became the true essence of my college experience.
As I near the end of my college journey, I feel prepared to pursue the life I genuinely desire. I refuse to accept anything less than what I deserve. I will no longer allow myself to sit on the sidelines. I am committed to being true to myself in front of others. I’ve come to understand that if people can’t appreciate me for who I am, then they are not meant to be part of my journey.
