Writing from the Spectrum: Embracing My Journey Through Words

Chapter 1: A Reflection on My Writing Journey
During my middle school years, I maintained a black-and-white journal, a lifeline amidst the bullying and confusion that clouded my self-image. The social dynamics of my peers baffled me, and my attempts to understand their behavior often resulted in mockery. Each night, I poured my thoughts onto the pages, analyzing the motivations behind the actions of those around me.
While I still don't grasp why my classmates found their chaotic behavior acceptable, writing became my sanctuary. With just a blank page as my companion, I would lose myself for hours in writing and drawing. I created comic strips reflecting my daily experiences and penned fictional tales where I emerged as the protagonist. Writing was my escape.
As I transitioned to college, studying Journalism, I shifted my focus from my childhood passion for Meteorology to a deeper exploration of writing. I was immersed in crafting a sci-fi novel that drew inspiration from my fascination with weather. The narrative followed young storm chasers navigating their dual lives of weather enthusiasm and middle school challenges. This endeavor fueled my creativity, leading to the creation of various stories.
With each character and plot I developed, I felt increasingly liberated in my writing. It became a medium through which I could delve into parts of my life that I had previously kept at bay. Writing encouraged me to confront emotions and feelings that I might have otherwise ignored. My preferred writing environment is one of solitude, where I can process my thoughts thoroughly. Busy settings are not my forte, except when I don my noise-canceling headphones in a bustling café.
For me, writing transcended mere storytelling; it became a therapeutic outlet. It provided a voice for the words I struggled to articulate in conversation. My written thoughts flowed more coherently than my spoken words, allowing me to express myself with clarity. The encouragement I received when others read my work, whether in books, blogs, or articles, was exhilarating. Their feedback fueled my confidence, encouraging me to embrace my writing further.
Navigating life with ADHD and Autism means I often rely on writing to aid my memory and ensure my communication remains straightforward, minimizing cognitive overload for my readers. The journey of writing is remarkable, and I am immensely grateful to be surrounded by fellow writers from whom I can learn and grow.
