Who Truly Deserves Our Worship? A Reflection on Heroes

Chapter 1: The Nature of Fame
Recently, I came across a video suggested by YouTube featuring the thrilling final match of Wimbledon, showcasing Carlos Alcaraz against Novak Djokovic. The game was exhilarating, and Alcaraz emerged as the champion, earning a substantial prize of $3 million along with immense recognition and admiration. Many view him as a role model, inspiring children to aspire to his level of achievement.
As the audience erupted in applause, I couldn't help but ponder: Why do these athletes receive such adoration? Do they genuinely merit it?
While Alcaraz's accomplishments are undoubtedly impressive, reaching such heights in any field requires immense dedication and skill. (And yes, substantial financial backing.)
But consider this: who truly deserves our reverence more—Alcaraz or Arland D. Williams Jr.?
You might wonder, "Who is that?"
Precisely. If you delve deeper, you'll discover that he selflessly sacrificed his life for others. Acknowledging the risks, he bravely faced his fear of water while engaged to be married. Despite having much to lose, he repeatedly offered help to others until his own life was tragically lost. How many of us possess such courage and willingness to act selflessly?
Perhaps comparing them is unjust: Williams passed away in 1982, a time long forgotten by many.
So, let’s consider another comparison: Alcaraz versus a veteran firefighter or a dedicated babysitter like Gui-Xiang Lui, who has devoted eight years to caring for a child abandoned by her father. After the initial support waned, Lui and her husband took on the financial burdens, spending over $10,000 on medical care for the child diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Yet, how many recognize her name?
While you may hold a differing opinion, I genuinely believe that she deserves far more admiration and respect. In my eyes, she is a true hero, far surpassing the accolades given to Alcaraz.
There's a powerful meme circulating online that highlights this disparity: on one side, a renowned soccer player; on the other, a firefighter cradling a distressed child. The caption reads: “It disheartens me to think that an athlete earns 300 times more than someone who saves lives.”
Now, consider how we compensate our educators, from kindergarten through high school. They hold one of the most vital roles in shaping society, yet we undervalue their contributions, while showering wealth upon athletes and entertainers.
Don't you think we have our priorities misaligned?
Every time I witness movie stars strutting down the red carpet, greeted by throngs of passionate fans exclaiming, “I love you,” I often reflect: “Why don't we revere those who truly make a difference, like the educators who tirelessly support struggling students? Or the journalists risking their lives to reveal corruption? Or the healthcare workers who confront life-threatening challenges during health crises?”
Instead, we elevate these celebrities, bestowing upon them fortunes and scrutinizing every aspect of their lives as if they were deities. Is this truly justifiable?
I find myself questioning this reality.
