The Ultimate Solution for Battling Overthinking
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Overthinking
Our capacity to think is arguably humanity's greatest strength. This unique trait distinguishes us as the most advanced beings on Earth. It empowers us to make significant life choices, differentiate right from wrong, innovate solutions, and even forecast weather patterns and market fluctuations.
However, this remarkable ability can also lead us down a perilous path. If we are not vigilant, we can easily become ensnared in the cycle of overthinking.
As someone who has struggled with overthinking throughout my life, I've come to realize that it often revolves around my past failures. For instance, I often replay the memories of:
- That unsuccessful digital product (I’ve launched two).
- That post that received the least engagement.
- That month when my income dipped significantly.
- That week when I indulged in unhealthy eating habits.
- That day I skipped my workout.
The list seems endless. It's important to understand that failure is a universal experience; even the prominent figures we admire on social media have faced numerous setbacks.
The real issue lies not in failing but in our tendency to overanalyze those failures.
This constant overthinking has held me back from launching any new product since January 2023, as I am haunted by the fear of failing for a third time. Yet, playing it safe often leads to greater failures. (Spoiler alert: I have a new product on the horizon!)
To break free from this cycle, one must take calculated risks and avoid overthinking.
The key for new creators is to remain actively engaged in productive activities. Action serves as a powerful remedy for wayward thoughts. The more you focus on your goals, the better you will feel about yourself. And as your self-esteem rises, so too will the quality of your thoughts.
However, it's crucial to note that simply staying busy isn’t enough. The quality of your activities matters more than the time spent doing them. If your idea of productivity is binge-watching series and snacking mindlessly, then it’s time for a change.
On the other hand, if you cultivate a habit of engaging in activities that stimulate your creativity, you will discover the true essence of being a creator.
Here are some suggestions:
- Read extensively across various genres—not just business literature, but also history, philosophy, and fiction.
- Write regularly.
- Practice meditation.
- Consume high-quality content.
- Spend time outdoors when possible.
- Feed your curiosity.
- Dedicate at least 15 minutes each day to a creative pursuit (like cooking, dancing, singing, or painting).
Without incorporating some of these practices, I doubt I could manage to write 100 articles on Medium while maintaining my career as a dentist.
While this may sound like typical motivational advice, these principles are foundational to the creative process. You cannot expect to produce quality work if you spend all your time scrolling social media or watching TV.
Trust me, there is a much richer life waiting for you beyond the screen!
The most rewarding part of engaging in these activities is that you'll find you have little time left to dwell on negative thoughts.
