When Is It the Right Time to Move On from Your Job?

Understanding the Timing for Quitting
The question of when to quit your job is significant. According to federal statistics from the U.S., approximately 50.5 million individuals voluntarily left their positions in 2022, up from 47 million in 2021. This trend, often referred to as the "Great Resignation," has been growing since before the pandemic and has only intensified.
There are several reasons people decide to leave their jobs, but they can generally be categorized into three main factors.
Misalignment of Core Values
While many of us share common values such as respect, autonomy, and security, the importance we assign to these values varies. For instance, during my time as a single mother, financial stability was my top priority in career decisions. However, once that responsibility lessened, my focus shifted to making a positive impact on others' lives.
Even as I transitioned out of the financial sector, I found great joy in helping individuals achieve their aspirations. Yet, the relentless pressure to sell unnecessary products clashed with my commitment to integrity. A significant number of people are resigning because they realize their jobs no longer reflect their values. Spending a significant portion of our lives in a role that contradicts our beliefs can lead to a gradual, draining experience.
Misalignment with Your Purpose
For many, the decision to leave their jobs—sometimes after decades of service—often stems from a desire to pursue their true purpose, or their "Big Why." Discovering one’s purpose can be a lengthy process, and for some, it may not become a priority until later stages in life.
Addressing Fears and Limiting Beliefs
A common reason individuals remain stuck in unfulfilling jobs, relationships, or lifestyles is due to fears and limiting beliefs. These often manifest as thoughts such as, "Who would hire me at my age?" or "I'm not skilled enough." Such self-doubt can hinder our potential for change.
A Lack of Self-Awareness
Sometimes, we lack clarity regarding our skills and what we truly value. It's crucial to recognize what ignites our passions and what we can offer to the world.
Bringing It All Together
Gaining the confidence to quit becomes easier when we value ourselves more than the jobs we hold. To successfully navigate this transition, we should strive to be:
- Strategic and visible
- Skilled at self-promotion
- Strong personal brand builders
- Clear about our life purpose and vision
Ultimately, determining when to leave a job is a deeply personal choice. If you find yourself giving more than you receive, feeling overlooked and powerless, or if your job negatively impacts your mental health, it may be time to contemplate a change.
Recognizing unconscious beliefs, establishing boundaries, and becoming adept at promoting yourself are crucial steps. Remember, wherever you go next, your habits will follow.
