Navigating Life's Twenties: Lessons Learned and Mistakes Made

Chapter 1: Reflections on My Twenties
When I consider my twenties, I try to view that decade as a valuable time in my life. Yet, if given the chance to revisit those years, I would likely decline without hesitation. Now, in my thirties, I bear the responsibilities of family, work, and home ownership, but the greatest joy I find stems from my acquired expertise and the confidence I have in utilizing my skills to move forward.
Section 1.1: Starting My Career
I embarked on my professional journey as a graphic designer in print media. Although I enjoyed the creativity involved, I often felt it lacked the analytical problem-solving aspect I craved. Presenting my work to clients posed a considerable challenge—not due to shyness or an inability to articulate my ideas, but because of the convoluted language often required to persuade clients to accept creative concepts.
My first position was with a marketing agency, where clients sought various services. Despite the supportive and encouraging colleagues around me, I never felt anyone truly grasped the elements necessary for crafting a successful marketing campaign. Most successes seemed more serendipitous than strategic.
In this environment, I found myself justifying my work endlessly. Ideally, I would have preferred to straightforwardly inform clients that I had conducted thorough market research and that the design choices I proposed—colors, styles—were effective and memorable. My honest thought was, “If you don’t like it, then maybe this isn’t for you.”
Subsection 1.1.1: Challenges in the Workplace
Driven by hard work, I dedicated myself day and night to becoming the best designer I could be. I made some progress in my career, but by 2014, I recognized that the small marketing agencies I worked for were struggling financially. With just $100, one could run ads on Facebook and achieve similar results as more established companies.
Eventually, I came to realize that my career trajectory had stagnated. The persistent feeling of peddling superficial concepts led me to boredom and an overwhelming sense of impending layoff.
Section 1.2: A Shift in Focus
In retrospect, perhaps a change in attitude, work environment, or clientele could have kept me in graphic design. It pains me to think about it because I loved that field, but the corporate atmosphere extinguished my enthusiasm.
Feeling lost and uninspired, I turned to online courses on CodeSchool (which has since been acquired by Pluralsight, a fact that saddens me). The engaging content on various programming languages captivated me, particularly Ruby and JavaScript.
My immersion in coding felt like a remedy. I became so absorbed that sleep eluded me. I would condense my work hours to make time for learning how to animate, save, and manipulate elements on the screen. This new knowledge revitalized my designs.
Chapter 2: Embracing Change
After about a year of honing my coding skills, I started taking on pro-bono projects for friends and nonprofits. Gradually, I began attracting paying clients, and my income matched my previous full-time salary. However, I lacked the entrepreneurial drive I needed to push further.
That drive arrived unexpectedly when my agency, after analyzing finances, decided to lay off several employees, myself included.

To my surprise, losing my job turned out to be a pivotal moment. Rather than feeling despair, I felt exhilarated. At 22, without significant obligations, I was free to pursue my own path.
This layoff unexpectedly liberated me from a job I had grown to resent. For too long, I had allowed external factors to shape my journey. This shift empowered me to take control of my future.
Now, a decade later, I lead a team of talented programmers, creating outstanding products for clients I value. I feel part of a vibrant community of developers who resonate with my passions.
Section 2.1: The Lesson Learned
Here’s the key takeaway: If you find yourself unhappy in your current situation, don’t waste your time. No amount of money or material possessions can fill that void. I was fortunate enough to receive my wake-up call, or I might still be stuck, burdened by bills and anxieties about the future.
It's never too late to find your passion, but it may be easier when you have fewer responsibilities and the ability to live simply. Whether your interests lie in creative endeavors, hobbies, or even gaming (as many have found success streaming on platforms like Twitch), invest your energy into what excites you.
After reevaluating my life, I realized my greatest mistake was staying in a job I despised for nearly four years. I often wonder how different my life would be if I had spent those years pursuing my true passion. Even though changing careers can be daunting, the experience gained in your thirties can be transformative.
Some people lead lives devoid of fulfillment, merely existing until their later years. Don’t fall into that pattern.
