Maximize Your Presentations: Strategies for Success

Understanding the Impact of Your Presentations

Are you truly confident that your presentations are beneficial? Here are six essential checkpoints to guarantee that you provide your audience with what they need.

In December 2020, I embarked on a journey into biking. Initially, my rides were limited to our Arizona neighborhood, but as I gained confidence, I began cycling to the grocery store just under a mile away. Before long, I found myself riding to a doctor’s appointment a few miles down the road, all while light rain tapped on my helmet. At that moment, I felt unstoppable! I began exploring the trails alongside a nearby canal and started recognizing fellow cyclists, exchanging friendly waves each morning.

Fast forward, and I suspect my husband didn’t expect the bike he gifted me for Christmas to see this much action. While it may seem trivial to avid cyclists, I reached the point of biking approximately 18 miles daily. Transitioning from sedentary living to cruising at about 12 mph on my purple Huffy Cranbrook Beach Cruiser represented a significant change. This translates to around 90 minutes spent cycling each day. However, with summer's early heat and our busy family schedules, I currently manage around 60 minutes and 12 miles daily.

Reflecting on my cycling adventures, I realized I’ve worn out this bike to the point where the chain occasionally slips off. Just last week, when this happened, I did what I usually do: stop, flip my bike upside down, fix the chain, dust off my gloves, check the time, and hop back on. No big deal! Yet, when a man approached, I wondered if he might stop and offer assistance. To my surprise, he didn’t. While I didn’t require help, it made me ponder—do we only extend kindness to those we know?

Interestingly, just minutes after being ignored by "Can't-Be-Bothered Bob," I found myself at a busy intersection (Arizona Avenue and Ocotillo Road), preparing to make a left turn while signaling clearly. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed with offers of help from motorists who appeared unsure of how to proceed—some slowing down, others waving me on. This was both amusing and rejuvenating; it was nice to see so many people eager to assist when moments before, I had experienced indifference.

Upon returning home, I reflected on my encounters with "Can't-Be-Bothered Bob" and the overly helpful motorists, realizing that every presentation should aim to be more helpful than unhelpful.

Don't Be Like "Can't-Be-Bothered Bob"

Avoid being like the cyclist who ignored my plight. Your presentation should not merely consist of an information dump.

Here are some key points to consider:

  • Audience-Centric Approach: Focus on addressing the needs of your listeners rather than centering the presentation on yourself.
  • Engage Your Audience: Immediately clarify what attendees will gain or achieve by the end of your talk.
  • Facilitate Learning: Ask questions designed to evoke emotional, behavioral, and cognitive responses, aiming to transform how they feel, act, and think.

Hold Off on Over-Helping

Conversely, ensure you’re not overwhelming your audience with excessive information, causing confusion akin to a traffic jam. Your goal should be to leave them in a better position than when they arrived.

To do this:

  • Present Manageable Information: Limit your speaking time to 12-15 minutes (or 7-10 minutes online) before allowing the audience time to process the information.
  • Accommodate Different Learning Styles: Encourage varied engagement methods—reading, writing, discussing, and moving—rather than just lecturing.
  • Provide Actionable Steps: At the conclusion, offer a clear call-to-action to guide them on their next steps—be it reading an article, purchasing a book, or scheduling a follow-up.

By the way, I’ve been on the hunt for a new bike. The one I have is nearing the end of its life! You might wonder why I don’t just use a stationary bike—quite simply, it feels like going nowhere, and that’s not for me.

Update: My new bike is expected to arrive on June 18!

Second update: I had to return that bike due to a bent front wheel, but as of August 6, I’m now the proud owner of a seven-speed bike that already took me on a 24-mile ride! Nothing can stop me now!
