Mastering Speed: How Quick Work Can Transform Your Life

Chapter 1: The Motivation Behind Speed Enhancement

During my school years, there was a student named Pete who consistently completed his homework well ahead of his peers.

I attended a boarding school where twelve boys would share the same room to work on their assignments each evening. Pete would swiftly finish his tasks, allowing him time to immerse himself in his cherished novels. I would glance over at him, engrossed in the latest Sebastian Faulks (believe it or not, we were just thirteen), while I struggled with my essay.

I assumed that Pete must have been achieving mediocre grades due to his hurried approach. However, I was mistaken. He consistently ranked as one of the top students in our class. What was his secret?

While intelligence played a part, Pete possessed a unique skill: he had mastered the ability to work quickly while maintaining focus on the task at hand. There was no time wasted on distractions or side conversations.

In those days, I regarded Pete as somewhat of a nerd, and his efficiency annoyed me. Today, however, I hold him in high esteem.

In a world full of distractions, having a solid strategy to produce a high volume of quality work is essential, but it can be challenging. We often equate speed with inferior quality, fearing that working quickly will lead to mistakes.

Yet, it is possible to create remarkable work swiftly. Many individuals, not just exceptional geniuses, accomplish this every day. We, too, can emulate Pete (as well as artists like Picasso and DaVinci, or prolific authors like Enid Blyton) by integrating speed into our creative processes.

While speed isn't suitable for every task, it can be beneficial in bursts for activities that lend themselves to quick execution, allowing for moments of reflection and rest.

Imagine the transformation in your life if you could double, triple, or even quadruple your output while improving the quality of your work. What if you could write a compelling story or article every day, or even two in a single day? What about completing a book each month? It’s all within reach.

The key is to prioritize SPEED for specific tasks—brainstorming, writing, sketching, administrative duties, and emails. With practice, you can enhance your speed in all these areas.

We can train ourselves to work quickly through focused sprints, much like Pete did. The advantages are numerous: we sharpen our technical and creative skills, generate more content to share, and foster a following at a faster pace. Moreover, we often produce superior work through intense practice that requires less planning and more spontaneous creativity.

"Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things." ~ Ray Bradbury

This approach leaves us with additional time to invest in personal development, our businesses, and to enjoy life's other aspects.

Of course, mastering speed takes practice. Not everyone will excel on their first attempt. To effectively train for speed, you need three elements: a countdown clock, a commitment to make the most of every second, and repeated practice on similar tasks to improve your pace.

Creating under pressure mimics the conditions of survival. The ticking clock is reminiscent of the tension felt in action films when the walls seem to close in. When time is limited, your mind taps into its emergency reserves of creativity, helping you focus on what truly matters.

In moments of perceived urgency, you must think quickly, leading to unexpected ideas. This isn't about hurrying; it's about entering a productive flow.

By working swiftly, we unlock our true potential, and when we do, we often astonish ourselves. This is why we admire the remarkable achievements of those who have thrived under pressure—those who embraced the necessity for speed.
