The Journey to Sobriety: A Personal Reflection and Update

Chapter 1: A Fresh Perspective on Sobriety
Let’s dive into a little update, shall we?
(Yes, we’re inventing new terms now.)
In a previous post, I discussed my relationship with alcohol and the actionable steps to decrease its presence in our lives.
Struggling to Quit Drinking? You’re Not Alone.
In that article, I shared my intention to completely cut alcohol from my life—at least for a while—due to an upcoming stomach surgery. The recommendation is to avoid alcohol for roughly two months leading up to the procedure and for six months afterward. That’s quite a stretch!
Unfortunately, my surgery date keeps getting pushed back, and so does my motivation.
However, I come bearing some good news!
After writing my last piece, I faced some initial difficulties. It’s challenging to forgo that nightly glass of wine when it’s become a part of your routine! Yet, by adopting a mindset focused on “progress rather than perfection,” things began to improve significantly.
Perhaps releasing some of the pressure was just what I needed?
Before the pandemic hit, my alcohol consumption was minimal. However, the monotony of being confined at home in early 2020 led to a shift in my habits. Recently, I recognized that my continued drinking was purely habitual and unnecessary.
And then, a light bulb went off. I got to work.

While I haven't completely eliminated alcohol from my life just yet, I've significantly cut back. Where I once purchased several bottles of wine each week, I now buy less than one—sometimes none at all.
During a trip in mid-March, despite the surrounding temptations, I only ordered two drinks throughout the entire vacation. And guess what? I didn’t mind one bit!
Looking ahead, within a few weeks, I expect to reach a “zero amount.” I’m genuinely excited about this goal, which no longer feels daunting.
After all, reducing alcohol means a healthier mind and body. I’m eager to discover what I can accomplish with a clearer perspective.
As I conclude, I want to encourage those who are also working to lessen their alcohol consumption. It’s achievable, and you can find happiness along the way. If you’re on this journey, know that I’m cheering you on from a distance.
It might be a challenge, but I assure you, it’s worthwhile.
