Effective communication is crucial for establishing trust among employees. Yet, it often seems to be diminishing in various workplaces.

Recently, I found myself staring at a blank screen, contemplating an email I wanted to send to my principal. Earlier that day, we had a discussion about a new in-school suspension program. After our talk, I felt uncertain about the program's effectiveness for our students, which prompted me to draft an email to express my support and offer assistance. I am still awaiting a reply. When I encountered her in the hallway, she didn’t mention my message. It felt as if my email had vanished into a void.

I also sent another important email—at least I believed it was significant. She had solicited teachers to tutor students facing expulsion, and I volunteered for this paid position. This initiative is a new approach for our district, aimed at helping these students stay engaged while awaiting approval. My skepticism about its effectiveness is perhaps a topic for another discussion. I had several questions regarding the start date and compensation, but once again, my email seemingly disappeared without a trace.

The lack of response from leadership is puzzling and feels disrespectful. While it’s understandable to ignore spam, vital communications should elicit at least a brief acknowledgment. Important information, such as deadlines, often requires timely responses. Ironically, my boss is currently urging teachers to respond to a survey she sent out two weeks ago. Yet, many teachers have not replied, highlighting a disconnect between expectation and practice.

In today's world of texts and instant messaging, being left "on read" can be frustrating. In some contexts, it is seen as disrespectful. However, if the message comes from a persistent ex or spam, ignoring it might be warranted. Nonetheless, in professional settings, it’s essential to address inquiries, even if that means having a face-to-face conversation or making a phone call.

Recently, I had a query for a colleague about the expulsion program. We exchanged messages for about ten minutes, but she didn’t respond to my last question. I assumed she was busy and would get back to me later. Instead, she took the initiative to come and talk to me during her lunch break. She showed me how to access the program and assist the students, explaining that it would be too complex to convey through email. I appreciated her effort to communicate effectively.

The principal of the 6th grade frequently emails me about students in in-school suspension. I make it a point to respond promptly because the information she shares is usually critical. Her messages often include expressions of gratitude for my assistance, reinforcing the importance of respectful communication.

Having spent six years in school leadership, overseeing various grade levels, I received numerous emails daily. While I couldn’t always reply immediately, I made it a priority to respond by the end of the day. Most inquiries were significant, often concerning a student or classroom management issue. Staff members feel valued when their concerns are acknowledged, and a lack of response can lead to feelings of underappreciation. If an employee raises a significant issue, it deserves attention. While immediate responses aren’t always feasible, addressing concerns as soon as possible is crucial.

Effective communication is essential for any organization's success. During my time at a large retail chain, I frequently received compliments on my customer service and communication skills, drawing customers to my register. The same principle applies to internal communications—keeping employees informed is a key component of excellent service.

The foundation of any business, whether in manufacturing or education, is its workforce. If employees feel undervalued, overall performance will decline. I have witnessed schools deteriorate when staff members leave due to poor leadership. Anyone familiar with effective leadership knows that open and transparent communication is vital for guiding a team.

When hiring leaders for schools or organizations, it’s imperative that they possess strong communication skills. During my leadership tenure, I crafted emails with careful consideration of tone and intent. The way a message is received is critical; if a teacher perceives criticism, it can hinder the desired outcomes. Achieving results requires collaboration, and if the individuals who drive the organization feel ineffective, the entire operation may falter.

In conclusion, whether in personal relationships or professional environments, it is essential to respond to important messages, whether they arrive via text or email. The sender may be seeking crucial information.
