From Captivity to Liberation: A Practical Guide to Finding Joy

Chapter 1: Understanding True Freedom
Freedom transcends images of palm trees and hammocks; it's about the empowerment that comes from making choices.
As Thich Nhat Hanh wisely said, “Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness.” Each week, I take time to reflect in my Bullet Journal, outlining my core values and conducting a monthly review to assess my progress towards my aspirations.
I've established several guiding principles for nurturing my self-esteem:
- Distance myself from unhelpful relationships.
- Align my goals with my self-worth.
- Practice kindness towards myself.
- Prioritize progress over perfection.
- Engage in activities that bring me joy.
Often, we feel compelled to do everything, which can create a false sense of obligation. True freedom emerges when we consciously choose how to spend our time, allowing us to engage in what we love and avoid what we dislike.
Freedom is not synonymous with wealth or travel; it’s the realization that happiness can be found in the present moment. Here’s a straightforward action plan to help you embark on this journey!

1. Identify Your Sources of Discontent
To achieve freedom, you first need to pinpoint what restricts you. Understanding your constraints is the first step toward liberation.
Grab a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the center. Label the left side “Things I Dislike” and the right side “Things I Cherish.”
Begin listing everything that frustrates, stresses, or burdens you on the left. Then, on the right, note down everything that brings you joy and meaning to your life. Aim for thoroughness in both lists.
Albert Camus stated, “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”
2. Create Your Freedom Action Plan
With your lists completed, it’s time to formulate a plan for liberation. Start with the “dislike” section. Ask yourself how you can minimize these burdens. Life may never be entirely pleasurable, but it can certainly be improved.
Consider these strategies:
- If household chores overwhelm you, simplify your living space or hire a cleaning service.
- If a job aspect frustrates you, brainstorm ways to improve it or discuss it with your supervisor.
- To tackle stress, explore yoga, meditation, or seek guidance from a coach.
- If conflicts arise with a partner, initiate an honest conversation to share feelings.
Remember, some changes can be made quickly, while others may require more time.
Next, examine your “cherish” list. Think about how you can enhance your experience of what you love.
For instance:
- If you treasure time with your children, strategize on how to increase both the quantity and quality of that time.
- If helping colleagues brings you joy, seek opportunities to focus on that aspect of your role.
- If healthy living is essential to you, allocate more resources towards it.
Document your steps to create your personal freedom blueprint. By acting on this plan, you'll gradually replace negativity with joy.
3. Align Your Life with Joyful Pursuits
Avoid fixating on what you dislike. While it’s beneficial to minimize that list, focusing excessively on negativity isn't productive.
Concentrate on what you love and aim to incorporate more of those activities into your life. The more aligned your life is with your passions, the quicker you will liberate yourself from negativity.
As you shift your focus, you’ll find yourself moving toward a more joyful existence.
“The secret to happiness is freedom… And the secret to freedom is courage.” — Thucydides
