Chapter 1: Meet the Author
Today's edition of Write Now features an engaging conversation with Rachel Lynn Solomon, an author currently residing in Amsterdam. She is known for her works including Past Present Future and Today Tonight Tomorrow.
Who is Rachel Lynn Solomon?
Hello! I’m Rachel Lynn Solomon, a writer of romance and young adult fiction, calling Amsterdam my home.
What are the themes in your writing?
I typically write about driven protagonists—often a bit lost—who navigate their journeys alongside supportive male characters. My stories often incorporate elements of Jewish culture and mental health awareness, striving to present a genuine and personal take on romantic relationships. While I label my books as romantic comedies, I believe they can delve into serious issues without sacrificing the joy of a happy ending. This is particularly evident in Past Present Future, the sequel to Today Tonight Tomorrow, where the lead character faces the challenges of having an incarcerated parent and a recent diagnosis of depression.
Where do you find inspiration to write?
For the past year, I’ve had my own dedicated writing office in my apartment, which has been a thrilling experience in decorating—though I’m still deciding on a few blank walls. I primarily write using Microsoft Word, while I utilize Google Docs and Sheets for outlining. I have a slight obsession with stationery, and I often jot down my writing progress in a notebook. I must admit, the prospect of earning a sticker at the end of a writing session serves as a great motivator!
When do you dedicate time to write?
I’m a full-time writer who tries to adhere to a 9–5 routine. I also follow the Pomodoro technique: I write for 20-30 minutes, then take a 5-minute break to stretch or tackle household chores. My peak productivity occurs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so I reserve the latter part of the day for administrative tasks and marketing efforts. With simultaneous deadlines for my young adult and adult novels, I focus on the project that’s due first, as I can only immerse myself in one narrative at a time until it’s with my editor.
Why do you feel compelled to write?
Much like many authors in the young adult genre, I write for my teenage self and for today’s youth who may need reassurance that they’re not alone. I aim to depict healthy relationships—not in a preachy manner—but to inspire readers to pursue their desires in romantic contexts, or to find those same aspirations mirrored in the narratives. I grew up encountering heroines who were repressed and insecure about their bodies and sexuality, so themes of sexual autonomy and self-discovery frequently feature in my stories.
Bonus: What are your hobbies outside of writing?
Having moved from Seattle to Amsterdam three years ago, I’m enthusiastic about exploring my new city, crafting, and traveling.
My sincere appreciation goes to Rachel Lynn Solomon for her insights in this interview.
