Embracing Your Growth: Who Do You Wish to Become Next Year?

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery
During a recent lunch with a friend, the discussion turned to a broadcast featuring Pam Gregory, centered around the idea of envisioning who you want to become by this time next year. This topic intrigued me, as it shifts the focus from mere accomplishments to the essence of the person I aspire to be.
The conversation sparked various reflections at the table. One individual expressed a desire to enhance their self-care and establish stronger boundaries, while another aimed to be more present with loved ones without losing their identity. Personally, I voiced my wish to cultivate a greater sense of relaxation in my life.
Given my recent move, I find this goal more attainable compared to previous years. Overall, I aspire to experience a more balanced nervous system. It reminds me of Richard Carlson's book, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, and It's All Small Stuff.
Over time, I've learned that simply understanding these concepts intellectually isn't enough to alter my physical responses. Throughout childhood, we are often influenced by adults—parents, teachers, coaches, and peers—who shape our identities, frequently overshadowing our genuine aspirations. Consequently, we grow up striving to fit a predefined mold, which can create deep-rooted patterns that remain challenging to change in adulthood. While transformation is difficult, it is possible with conscious effort, as I've discussed in previous articles like Are the People You Surround Yourself With a Match to What You Want From Life? and Your Childhood Is Not Your Fault but It Is Your Responsibility.
Now that I have set the intention to be more relaxed, this goal influences my daily choices. In my previous move, I rushed to unpack everything within two weeks. This time, however, I am embracing a more measured pace. For instance, alongside unpacking, I am committed to reflecting on my personal growth and sharing those insights weekly. If I don’t start writing by the designated day, I usually prioritize it. Yet today, I took a different approach: after getting the kids ready, I enjoyed a beach walk, had lunch with a loved one, and connected with family before finally contemplating my thoughts for the week. Remarkably, my house remains largely untouched since morning. I might unpack some boxes tonight, or I might not.
While some people naturally adopt a relaxed approach, I typically prefer a clutter-free space. My instinct is to work diligently until everything is in order, as excess clutter triggers my anxiety. Therefore, cultivating the ability to relax amidst temporary disarray is a deliberate practice for me.
Who do you envision becoming by this time next year? Are you inclined to evolve into a better version of yourself, focusing not just on tangible achievements but on inner change? What steps can you take to nurture your growth, and which ingrained habits will you need to dismantle to reach your objectives?
