Embracing Tolerance Through Spiritual Growth in Recovery

Chapter 1: The Intersection of Spirituality and Tolerance
The more I delve into spirituality, the clearer it becomes that cultivating tolerance not only benefits those around me but also fosters a more harmonious existence for myself.
Recently, during a conversation with a friend, we touched upon the theme of tolerance. I've come to realize that embracing the spiritual dimensions of the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program has significantly increased my patience in various aspects of life.
The essence of the AA program is deeply spiritual. As stated in the second paragraph of “How It Works,” “If you desire what we possess and are ready to go to any lengths to achieve it, then COD.” (Come On Down) I was eager for the wisdom shared by others and prepared to make significant efforts to attain it. Consequently, I eagerly adopted the principles of the Third Step and actively engaged in discussions at most AA meetings.
Whenever the meeting chair would inquire if anyone had difficulties with any part of the program or its steps, I would readily raise my hand. My thirst for knowledge led me to read extensively and surrender as much of my life to my Higher Power as possible. As I age and continue my journey in recovery, I find myself consistently integrating more spiritual study into my life.
Incorporating the principles of The Serenity Prayer has genuinely enriched my sense of happiness, joy, and freedom. I now have a profound desire to maintain this uplifting state. Open-mindedness is gradually returning to me.
I’ve learned that when faced with the choice of being happy or being right, I now opt for happiness. Recognizing that I can only change myself, I understand that others are entitled to their own opinions, even if they differ from mine.
It's important to note that acceptance or tolerance does not imply that one has to agree with everything. Rather, it's about recognizing others' viewpoints and moving forward with one’s own life. By letting go of the burden of others' thoughts and opinions, I free my mind, allowing me to remain in a state of happiness, joy, and freedom. This transformation is achievable for anyone committed to the program daily. Thank you, God!
