Embracing Change: Why Getting Fired Can Lead to Success
Written on
Chapter 1: The Unexpected Turn
In late 2022, I experienced a significant life event: I was let go from my job. Surprisingly, it didn’t catch me off guard; I recognized my role in it. Skipping work is one of the simplest paths to termination, and that’s exactly what I chose to do.
Why would anyone make such a choice? It’s natural to want to keep your job, especially when you’re facing the harsh realities of having no savings, no backup plan, and no support system. Despite these challenges, I still took that leap of faith—1,200 miles away from my family and friends—because I felt an urgent need to change my situation.
Let’s delve into why this seemingly reckless choice turned out to be the best decision I ever made.
The Breaking Point
Every individual reaches a moment when they realize enough is enough. Your patience wears thin, and the situation becomes unbearable. This can stem from various sources, including relationships, jobs, cities, or educational institutions.
Once you hit that critical juncture, change is not just possible; it’s necessary. The discomfort of remaining stagnant can feel like a dagger twisting in your gut. If you’ve experienced this, you’re not alone. The worst response in such a situation is to remain unchanged. Think of that feeling as life’s way of urging you to move forward.
I didn’t know exactly what I needed to address, but I was acutely aware that I had to take action.
Pressing Matters
During the week leading up to my termination, I felt adrift, as if my lifeboat had veered off course into the Bermuda Triangle. In this dark period, I sought guidance from my own compass. I began to ask myself critical questions:
- What skills do I possess?
- How can I be of service to others?
- Who can I learn from?
- How will I afford my meals? (a frequent concern)
- What can I do to earn money within the next month?
As I gathered this information, I dove into action, barely lifting my eyes from my laptop for weeks. After numerous attempts, I finally managed to make enough money in my first month to cover my rent—just barely. What a relief it was!
By an incredible stroke of luck, that initial success continued. While I was earning only half of what I had made in my previous job, the excitement of entrepreneurship was unmatched. Now, nine months later, the marketing and advertising firm I established is thriving.
It’s astonishing how much resilience you can uncover when you have nothing left to lose. I genuinely believe I would never have embarked on this entrepreneurial journey without that challenging, isolating period. Consider obstacles and hardships as the investments you need to make for your future success. Success isn’t free; it comes at a price. So, get out there and start collecting those experiences.
The Crossroads
We often arrive at a moment in life where we reassess our future and the sustainability of our daily routines. In a typical job, you dedicate eight hours each day to your employer—one-third of your waking hours. Do you truly love your job enough to endure that reality?
For me, the answer was a resounding no, and it didn’t take long to come to that realization. If you find yourself struggling with that reality, here’s a hard truth: quitting your job will bring significant challenges.
Sadly, many individuals who are fired or choose to leave won’t feel immediate relief. You may experience short-term discomfort, but this discomfort can lead to long-term gains.
Take a moment to reflect on that. A few years of hardship in search of stability is worth the potential for freedom and happiness a decade down the line. While the journey of being without a job is daunting, it’s far more challenging to remain in a role you’ve been doing for years that no longer fulfills you.
The Lesson
I hope my experiences resonate with those currently battling the struggle of a traditional job. Keep in mind that I am not exceptional. I don’t possess a higher IQ than you, nor did I come from wealth. I simply took a risk, committed myself to my work, and didn’t stop until I achieved results.
Of course, self-doubt often creeps in, but the more effort you put forth, the quieter that self-doubt becomes. Outwork your insecurities—there are matters that demand your attention!
As I conclude, I encourage you to live the life story you wish to recount to your future self. Make choices that won’t leave you disappointed.
