Embrace Authenticity: Be Your Best Self, Not a Copy

Chapter 1: Understanding Authenticity
The journey to authenticity begins with self-awareness. As Judy Garland aptly stated, “Be a first-rate version of yourself, not a second-rate version of someone else.”
Recently, my six-year-old grandson expressed his frustration quite dramatically, even tossing a few items in the process. When I asked him to stop, he replied, “That’s what I do when I’m angry. I throw things.”
I explained, “Not at Grampa’s house you don’t.” This led to a brief discussion about managing emotions, and it wasn’t long before his behavior improved.
Adults often use the excuse, “That’s just how I am.” Imagine the absurdity of saying to a police officer, “Sorry, officer, but that’s just my driving style.” With such an outlook, it wouldn't be long before your driving privileges vanish.
In our formative years, some of us were taught by adults that certain behaviors could hinder our aspirations—be it becoming an astronaut, an actor, or an athlete. Conversely, those who faced criticism focused on their errors often grew to doubt their instincts.
This leads to the misguided belief that we should emulate others. While having positive role models can guide us, overemphasizing this can result in a loss of our own identity as we strive to meet external expectations.
How can we remain true to ourselves while avoiding the justification of poor behavior? It’s essential to strike a balance.
We recognize the need for personal growth. While we all possess both strengths and weaknesses, focusing on enhancing our strengths yields the most significant benefits. Thus, our primary efforts should be directed here.
Nevertheless, we must also acknowledge that certain weaknesses can impede our ability to utilize our strengths effectively. The optimal approach is to first identify and cultivate our strong points, while remaining conscious of the attitudes and behaviors that hinder their application.
Ignoring these flaws isn't an option, but our main focus should be on harnessing our strengths for the betterment of our families, communities, and the world at large. This dedication will lead us closer to realizing our true potential.
Today’s empowering question: Which of your key strengths will you actively seek to utilize today?
