Children and AI: A Perfect Partnership in Creativity and Learning

The Future of Children's Interaction with AI
In every generation, children encounter advancements that their parents could only dream of, especially in the realm of technology, which is evolving at an unprecedented pace. With a six-year-old and a four-year-old at home, I find myself increasingly curious about the distinct experiences they will have compared to mine. I ponder how soon this divergence may begin and how we can ready them for a future intertwined with AI companions that is already unfolding!
As an inventor of physical products, I am captivated by the opportunities that digital innovations present to my kids. With the convergence of five major technologies—AI, robotics, energy storage, multionic sequencing, and public blockchains—delivering fresh updates daily, I am excited to observe their interactions with these advancements.
Recently, my six-year-old posed questions that allowed me to introduce him to the fascinating developments happening around us. For instance, while driving past a warehouse, we engaged in a lively discussion about the ratio of robots to humans inside and how that might shift over the coming years. He recognized the advantages of automation and even raised challenges, like how to keep all the robots charged. Most importantly, I was thrilled by how readily he embraced such a different world, prompting me to reflect on the barriers that limit progress.
The Skills of Tomorrow
I have long believed that my children will not need to learn how to drive. This idea, once a topic of debate at social gatherings, is now widely accepted as self-driving technology evolves at breakneck speed. In just ten years, when my oldest would typically be eligible for a learner's permit, this will likely be a non-issue.
My focus has shifted to the competencies they will need to cultivate in order to engage with AI companions effectively. My hopeful and somewhat uneducated perspective is that the skills and attributes necessary for their success are already naturally embedded in them, perhaps even more refined than in many adults! It appears that it is us, the grown-ups, who may need to rethink our strategies.
Walt Disney famously stated, “If they can dream it, they can do it.” This sentiment resonates with the latest Microsoft Co-Pilot advertisement, which illustrates the tangible benefits of having an AI partner. The ad showcases no-code game development, research assistance, and the creation of a storyboard for a film idea.
A New Era of Imagination
I firmly believe that in the near future—months rather than decades—what we can achieve will only be confined by our imagination. As we age, we often fall into predictable patterns, becoming skeptical and feeling restricted by the realities we face. We are faced with decisions, required to follow set paths, and constrained by the limitations of time.
Fortunately, our children see through this illusion and now possess the tools to demonstrate their beliefs. They understand that while time flows consistently in the physical realm, it behaves differently in the virtual world. They can traverse multiple paths at once and create anything their minds can envision. Just observe the wonders they conjure—transforming sheets into castles, couches into hospitals, and sticks into magic wands. I believe that creativity, curiosity, and a sense of wonder will shape the worlds of the future.
While media often highlights how AI companions are transforming the digital landscape, it won’t be long before these companions extend their capabilities across different domains. They will be able to respond to prompts in whatever manner is most suitable, whether virtual, physical, or a blend of both.
For instance, Ai Build, a London-based company backed by Boeing, recently garnered funding to create physical products through additive manufacturing, driven by natural language instructions.
Imagine constructing something—maybe even countless creations—both in the real and virtual worlds using simple language. Combine this with the curiosity and imagination that our children display daily.
Einstein once said, “I have no special talent; I am only passionately curious.” His success stemmed from maintaining a childlike sense of wonder. Therefore, the best way I can equip my children for the future is by fostering this childlike spirit within them, encouraging their energy, excitement, and enthusiasm as they grow. I am genuinely excited to see what they will create!
